Job Description

The Office of Indigenous Student Success provides student centered services and programs for students who self identify as Indigenous (American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiians) and guides students throughout their transition to university life as they search for community and indigeneity. Our vision is to uphold Indigenous student achievement, resilience, and community. Our department is part of the Inclusive Student Mentoring, Programming, and Success departments within the Division of Student Affairs. The department is in the Native American Cultural Center building (14).

The Student Development Coordinator Senior staff member provides holistic guidance and support to assist students in their development as a university student through the combination of academic learning and personal improvement/individual growth and to ensure meaningful and purposeful experiences and interactions that fosters a successful path towards graduation. Support for students includes providing culturally relevant programs and events, supervising Indigenous peer mentors, developing collaborative partnerships with university departments, and providing direct student support. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission and values of the Office of Indigenous Student Success. It is expected that the employee demonstrates behavior consistent with the core values and supports the Division of Student Affairs. This position reports to one of the OISS Manager, Student Development as well as the Director of Indigenous Student Success.

Student Relationships and Services - 30%

  • Assists with the design, implementation, and evaluation of services that provide innovative, meaningful, and supportive experiences to students thatintegrate academic learning and individual growth.
  • Serves as a liaison for students, and other departments within the University.
  • Uses aptitude and achievement assessments and action plans to help Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and those students who self identify as Indigenous college students explore their interests, skills, and abilities in the following areas: academic, social, personal wellbeing, financial, cultural, and career.
  • Provides direct service to a case load of undergraduate, graduate, commuter, transfer, and online students.
  • Review student data to determine a plan of action for success.
  • Offers academic guidance and refers students to appropriate campus advising centers.
  • Facilitates workshops/trainings provided to students to assist them in their development.
  • Gives personal/cultural/career guidance and refers when appropriate to other resources as needed.
  • Maintains student records, collects, and analyzes student and program data using Salesforce reports, reviews student survey assessments; adheres to university, state, and federal policies in relation to confidentiality of student records, etc.

Programming - 25%

  • Coordinates retention, student success programs, recruitment, and engagement activities in collaboration with key campus depart ents.
  • Develops and implements student programs in accordance with department strategic plan; assists in overseeing daily operations and coordinates program activities; and monitors expenditures in accordance with budget allocations.
  • Participates in department policy or decisionmaking; evaluates program effectiveness and implements evaluation methodology and analyzes results and reports findings.
  • Outreaches, interacts, and maintains liaison with students, faculty, staff and outside community agencies, tribal nations, and postsecondary institutions in facilitating program objectives.
  • Assists with marketing, website management, and event promotion.

Teamwork and Professionalism - 25%

  • Perform duties in alignment with OISS\'s mission, values, and practices.
  • Supervises student peer mentors, including hiring, conducts training, and performance evaluation.
  • Sets clear work expectations for student peer mentors and coaches them to work productively while meeting high quality standards for assigned tasks.
  • Work together in a team setting to accomplish various projects demonstrate empathy in support for one another and foster an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Build effective working relationships with partners and liaisons across campus in support of NAU students and programs.
  • Participates in assigned committees.
