University of Maine System Child Care Substitute Teacher in Farmington, Maine
Statement of the job:
The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) seeks applicants to fill the position of Substitute Teacher. This position is responsible for assisting in the implementation of a developmentally appropriate preschool program in a childcare setting, as well as assisting with the supervision of UMF practicum students, interns, and work-study students. This position works closely with children, families, UMF students, and faculty.
Essential Duties
Protects the safety of all children in the center and monitors children closely.
Communicates and interacts with children during care taking routines and free engagement time.
Manages the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment.
Exhibits sensitive and responsive caregiving, reading and responding to children’s cues and needs, and facilitating independence and the development of self-help skills when appropriate.
Exhibits behavior management consistent with Sweatt-Winter philosophy, including recognizing and identifying difficult feelings, redirection, setting up the environment to minimize stress and conflict, and positively reinforcing children while engaging positively with others.
Interacts with children during play activities both indoors and on the playground.
Treats parents and children with dignity and respect, recognizing the cultural and socioeconomic diversity of the population.
Adapts teaching methods to fit the needs of each student.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
A high school diploma or the equivalent
At least one year of experience in Early Childhood Education or a related field
The ability to work well with children and families
Current CPR/First Aid certification (or completion within the first 30 days)
Successful completion of DHHS fingerprinting and background check
Completion of training required by State of Maine Licensing
Preferred Qualifications
Associate or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field
One (1) to three (3) years of preschool teaching experience
Experience mentoring pre-service teachers
Post-graduate teaching experience
