Farmingdale State College seeks to hire a full-time Scholarship Program Counselor who will advise and serve Farmingdale students as a professional staff member in the college's Research Aligned Mentorship (RAM) Program. The RAM Program at Farmingdale State College is an extremely prestigious program originally founded by a US Department of Education initiative to support historically minoritized, low-income, and first-generation students, to embolden them with a passion for research and applied learning as a means to keep them on track through their college careers. The RAM Program currently has over 800 RAM student scholars benefiting from additional advisement, coursework, and special workshops and events. In addition to the RAM Scholar distinction, the RAM Program also oversees several of the institution's largest privately funded scholarship programs; the Northwell Scholarship, the Sillcox Scholarship, and The Dream.US Scholarship. These scholarships consist of more than 120 scholars and span across all academic majors and disciplines. Additionally, the RAM Program oversees the academic advisement and implementation of the S-STEM Scholarship. The S-STEM Scholarship is a prestigious US National Science Foundation award given to high-achieving Bioscience and Mathematics students who demonstrate financial need.

The Scholarship Program Counselor will work closely with the other members of the RAM staff and will report to the Director of the RAM Program. This position will also collaborate with administrators, faculty, staff, and offices across the College, specifically with the Office of Development, Alumni Engagement, the Office of Student Accounts and Financial Aid, and the Division of Academic Affairs. This counselor will also work closely with the Director to identify and develop programmatic support for undocumented colleges students or students from historically minoritized, low-income, and first-generation backgrounds who are not eligible for any additional Farmingdale support programs or scholarships. The Counselor will serve the scholars through five major areas of concentration:

Academic Advisement and Support

  • Offering holistic academic advisement to our specialized scholarship programs, such as, but not limited to Northwell, Sillcox, Dream.US, and S-STEM Scholarship students in several different majors and disciplines.

  • Advising and registering a cohort of new first-year and continuing scholars.

  • Closely tracking and monitoring student progress.

  • Acting as a student advocate and maintaining a student-centered approach.

  • Connecting scholars to all available campus resources and support services.

  • Meeting regularly with scholars given early warning and probation notices and orchestrating follow-up.

  • Providing information, resources, and referrals on broad academic matters and special opportunities to scholars.

  • Sustain partnerships with other individuals and offices (department chairs, faculty, tutoring center, writing center, disabilities services, financial aid, student affairs, athletics, veterans affairs, etc.) to assure that scholars receive appropriate guidance and support.

  • Teach sections of the FYE 101 (First Year Experience), as needed, for incoming scholarship students.

Data Management and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of student interactions, applications, outcomes, and programmatic effectiveness.

  • Work with institutional partners to study the support provided to undocumented students.

  • Develop strategic initiatives to support undocumented, DACA, TPS students or students who may identify as first-generation, low-income, or historically minoritized who may not be eligible for other programmatic support services.

Program Coordination

  • Assisting with planning and setting up social and academic community building activities for scholars.

  • Conducting workshops and preparing advisement materials and handbooks.

  • Welcoming incoming first-year scholars and their families by offering summer transition seminars and welcome events.

  • Monitor and track all scholar success and progression.

  • Work directly with the Manager of Scholarship and Donor Stewardship and all necessary financial aid personnel.

  • Prepare semesterly and yearly reports of student academic success and scholarship completion for both internal consumption and scholarship reports.

  • Oversee the programmatic entities of The Dream.US applied-learning funding opportunities of the Fellowship Program ($30k) and Internship Funding Program ($30k).

  • Coordinate and run all necessary onboarding meetings and events for all specialized programs (Northwell Scholarship, Sillcox Scholarship, Dream.US Scholarship, and S-STEM Scholarship).

Financial Liaison

  • Assist scholars with Financial Aid documentation and applications.

  • Work directly with the Office of Student Accounts and Financial Aid to ensure scholars receive in-state tuition and all other proper financial support.

  • Monitor all scholar applications and progression in Financial Aid applications.

  • Act as Person of Contact for the Dream.US Scholarship.

Recruitment

  • Collaborate closely with the Admissions Team to recruit and support students into these specific scholarships.

  • Host occasional workshops and meetings with potential students, high school counselors, and external partners.

    Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Experience working with populations who identify as low-income, first generation, and/or historically underrepresented groups.

  • Knowledge of skills for academic success such as study habits, time management, and managing test anxiety.

  • Ability to counsel college students 1:1, assessing needs and offering guidance.

  • Ability to work with individuals and offices that serve students.

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree awarded by May 2025.

  • Familiarity with any student and course information software and degree audit tool (such as Banner and Degree Works).

  • Familiarity with scholarship maintenance and financial aid documentation.

  • Experience serving as an academic advisor or counselor in Higher Education.

  • Experience assisting and servicing students with Financial Aid applications.

  • Experience in program assessment and evaluation.

  • Experience teaching/facilitating in a higher education setting.

  • Excellent record-keeping skills (using computer systems).

  • Experience in undergraduate research or internships.

  • Familiarity with academic fellowship programs.

    Additional Information:

This is a full-time UUP position.

  • For the first 10 working days, beginning Monday, March 3, 2025, and ending Friday, March 14, 2025, applications will be limited to UUP Farmingdale.
