Job Announcement

Join the Park Authority and our nationally recognized team of professionals! This position will work as a part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. With more than 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more, FCPA is an exciting organization to be a part of and there are many opportunities for staff to make a difference at every level. Under direct supervision, performs a variety of routine, manual labor tasks. Participates in the work of an assigned athletic field or park maintenance crew, performing tasks relating to grounds maintenance and facility repairs. Performs maintenance on park facilities e.g. athletic fields, sport courts, picnic areas, playgrounds, amphitheaters, trails, restrooms, parking lots, signs, fencing, etc. Duties include mowing, snow removal, and other grounds maintenance tasks. Removes litter and performs rough carpentry, light construction, minor repairs, and painting of facilities as necessary. Operates a tractor/bucket loader with attachments, small-engine park maintenance equipment, such as: infield groomers, utility vehicles, mowers, and other equipment. Uses gas and battery powered equipment such as trimmer, blower, and chainsaw. Performs related duties as required.

Note: Reports each morning to, Area 6. 1410 Hunter Mill Rd. Vienna Va. 22182 and is dispatched to assigned parks. In addition to hauling and equipment operation, this position is part of the overall labor team. 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, with overtime required when necessary. Occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work required. Positions are subject to transfer to other maintenance operation locations. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position. Position is Emergency Service Personnel.

Illustrative Duties

  • Clears sidewalks of ice and snow;

  • Cleans facilities, to include removing trash and litter;

  • Loads and unloads trucks;

  • Applies pesticides, fertilizer, and other chemicals under supervision of a certified pest applicator;

  • Maintains and repairs grounds and turf (i.e., reconditioning, vegetation control, and repairs);

  • Repairs irrigation systems (i.e., sprinklers, valves, and pipes);

  • Performs minor building and/or equipment repair and/or maintenance;

  • Operates tractors and mowers, chain saws, or cutoff saws;

  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;

  • Reports unsafe working conditions;

  • Complies with safety competencies.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of small equipment to include weed eater, push mower, power tamper, chain saw, concrete saw and gas generator;

  • Basic knowledge of air compressors and pneumatic tools;

  • Knowledge of and the ability to use and perform basic scheduled maintenance on various types of hand tools, machinery, etc.;

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices;

  • Ability to perform duties requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude;

  • Ability to operate various types of motor vehicles;

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions;

  • Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.;

  • Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor;

  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;

  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees, and supervisors.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience performing maintenance activities to parks using a tractor/bucket loader with attachments, small-engine park maintenance equipment, such as: infield groomers, utility vehicles, mowers, and other equipment.

  • Uses gas and battery powered equipment such as trimmer, blower, and chainsaw.

  • Experience with the repair and maintenance of outdoor maintenance equipment.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Driver's license (required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to bend, twist, turn, stand, sit and stoop. Ability to climb on and off equipment. Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to operate grounds equipment. Ability to operate motor vehicle and trailer. Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time. Ability to traverse uneven ground. Ability to work in variable weather conditions while performing physical labor.
