Job Description

NREL is seeking to hire a Project Controller with experience in assisting groups and projects for its team at the NREL Alaska Campus.

The NREL Alaska Campus is located in the heart of Interior Alaska, Fairbanks is surrounded by mountains, trails, and rivers, as well as vibrant music, culture, and community. With 22 hours of sunlight in the summer and cold, snowy winters, Fairbanks is an outdoor lovers' paradise. The NREL Alaska Team is housed in the farthest-north LEED Platinum building in the world, a living laboratory for solar, geothermal, biomass, thermal storage, and energy efficient technologies.

Project Controller III duties include a variety of tasks that support technical projects.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring Subcontracts : Work with technical leads to develop work descriptions, work with subcontracts to expedite subcontract execution, track accruals, approve invoices, track and retain/file subcontract deliverables.

  • Planning Projects : Work with technical leads to develop work descriptions, budgets and timelines for new projects. As projects are ongoing track and retain deliverables against the project timeline.

  • Reporting : Provide regular client reporting on subcontracts and projects. Assist technical leads with developing monthly, quarterly and annual reports.

Sample specific tasks:

  • Develop subcontracting plans.

  • Work with technical leads to develop work statements, track subcontract execution and management, track subcontract budgets and invoices.

  • Work with project leads to establish and track against timelines, plan resources into tracking programs, monitor progress against deliverables, and track costs against plans.

  • Track technical deliverables and send reminders and updates to NREL research leads.

  • Organize and maintain project files such as project deliverables, statements of work and annual operating plans

  • Plan, organize, and execute project activities such as webinars, client meetings, workshops, and conferences.

  • Assist with submission of documents to DOE’s Project Management Center (PMC) system.

Project Controller II Primary duties are as above. Duties include a variety of tasks that support technical projects.

Basic Qualifications

For a Project Controller III:

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

For a Project Controller II:

Job Profile Summary

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. General knowledge and application of technical standards, principles, theories and techniques. Frequent application of industry concepts and principles. General knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Skilled in problem solving, written and verbal communication. Ability to use various computer software programs.

  • Experience with project management including experience in finance, cashflow analysis, and business processes.

  • Ability to understand technical concepts and data analytics.

  • Proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office 365 products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint ) or other computer software programs needed to effectively track and manage a project.

  • Ability to prepare professional communications and documents that are appropriate for internal stakeholders and leadership.

  • Thrives in a fast paced, innovative environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming, and collaboration skills including experience with customer/partner relationship and expectations management.

  • Initiates projects, works unsupervised, completes tasks independently, and solves roadblocks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with external and partner relationship management and community engagement in low-income communities and communities of color.

  • Experience working with rural Alaska a plus.

  • Experience working with tribal entities a plus.

  • Experience working with DOD a plus

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional III ARCEE / Annual Salary Range: $65,800 - $108,700

Job Profile: Professional II ARCEE / Annual Salary Range: $57,200 - $94,400

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
