Scientist I – Chemistry Manufacturing

How will you make an impact?

The chemistry production teams at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Eugene, Oregon manufacture small molecules, nanoparticles, quantum dots and conjugates using a broad range of laboratory and analytical techniques. Apply your synthesis skills, scientific knowledge, and analytical ability to supply the fluorescent probes and reagents for over 4000 critical research and commercial products that enable our customers in the life sciences industry to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.

What will you do?

Perform multi-step organic synthesis in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Cross-train with the polymer and bio-conjugate chemistry manufacturing teams to flex between teams to cover changes in demand between departments.

Complete manufacturing work orders efficiently and on schedule, follow manufacturing process instructions accurately, and follow all quality system requirements.

Recognize and call out manufacturing problems and failure of processes to yield expected results. Collaborate with senior staff to plan and implement corrections to manufacturing and/or testing processes.

Keep a clear, complete, and exact account of all manufacturing work using Master Batch Records, Work Instructions, and other required documentation.

Complete exact inventory and work order transactions in enterprise business systems.

Follow all safety policies and guidelines related to operation of process equipment, chemical handling, and waste disposal.

Support projects related to SKU and document creation and revision in an electronic change control system.

Occasionally perform repetitive task such as aliquoting reagents, vialing and labeling of products.

How will you get here?

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field.

1-2 years bench experience in organic synthesis and troubleshooting preferred.

Experience with laboratory techniques such as inert atmosphere, distillation, extraction, rotary evaporation, LC purification, TLC, and safe handling of chemicals and organic solvent.

Experience using common analytical techniques for monitoring and troubleshooting chemistry processes and testing product quality such as analytical HPLC, NMR, TLC, and UV-Vis and emission spectroscopy.

Knowledge and Skills

Strong technical writing skills with an ability to document synthetic procedures accurately and succinctly.

Ability to write in English with correct word usage, grammar, and spelling.

Ability to intuitively perform UOM conversion in the metric system (mass, volume, concentration) and chemistry conversions (mass, moles, density, molarity).

Adaptable, eager learner, able to think critically, proactively address problems, and stay composed in stressful or ambiguous situations.

Effective people skills in a collaborative work environment with strong interpersonal and time management skills.
