As an Research and Development Manager, will serve as a subject matter expert for new product formulation and improvements to our natural ingredient portfolio.

The Research and Development Managers role will have high visibility with customers and work closely with sales to develop new products, present innovative ideas and concepts to customers and potential customers. This will include evaluating industry trends to integrate into the development of new products, and enhancing relationships with vendors and clients by developing customized solutions. Drive process improvements to improve quality, consistency and/or reduce overall total cost of ownership. This person will work as part of a Research and Development function, while also supporting cross-functional teams including Sales and Marketing, QA, Procurement, and Product Management.

The typical work week for this role is Monday through Friday, with the flexibility for hybrid/remote work, as well as occasional travel for trade shows or customer visits. Typical duties for this full-time role can include:

+ + Leads formulation, management, and execution in the development of new products and product improvements, from bench and concept phases through production scale; aligns cross-functional expectation of products

  • Creates a competitive advantage, supporting major strategic business objectives with new products, compelling research findings on product efficacy, product line strategy, and enhancements to existing products

  • Presents concepts and provides technical expertise to clients and cross-functional project teams, including long term continuous improvement projects and daily production processes

  • Runs plant trials of new or cost-reduction sourced ingredients

  • Samples products and provides organoleptic input on taste, scent, texture, color, etc.

  • Maintains clear project communication and timelines; Produces tangible deliverables within established timelines

  • Researches trends, interprets consumer and market research, and assembles input from clients and cross-functional teams to support formulation efforts; provides recommendation and insight on future innovation and opportunities; co-innovates and presents product concepts to clients and prospective clients

  • Works closely with sales and marketing team to clearly communicate technical and descriptive attributes of product for marketing materials and presentations

  • Builds relationships with clients and R&D professionals, by providing trend and concept information, participating in co-innovating, and providing technical support

  • Recommends new products and leads sourcing of all new products

    What We Are Looking For:

    • MS or BS degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Foods & Nutrition, Food Engineering, or a related discipline is required
  • 2-5 years' related food Research and Development experience with a demonstrated ability develop successful food products

  • Experience creating and delivering high quality presentations to internal and external stakeholders

  • Prior experience selecting, mentoring, and developing team members or leading project teams

  • Culinary background a plus

  • An understanding of food manufacturing, product development, food safety principles, guidelines and objectives

  • Project management skills

  • Proficient skill level in Outlook, Excel, Word (must have the ability to sort data, format professionally, and add/use formulas)

  • Adept at taking initiative to track down information, communicate updates, and recommend opportunities for improvement

  • High level of attention to detail, time management, and organization

  • Ability to provide timely and consistent follow-through on workflow
