Role Summary/Purpose:

The Staff Product Engineer will be responsible for leading engineering quotation efforts for all product lines supported by the Digital Onboard Solutions Engineering (DOSE) team. To do so, the successful candidate will work closely with Product Management, Program Management and Commercial Operation teams to develop offerings that drive world class solutions that bring advanced automation and data analytics to the rail industry. Additionally, the Staff Product Engineer will be responsible for engineering project coordination efforts such as measuring engineering delivery and comparing against the estimates to improve future efforts. Lastly, the role will focus on engineering operations with the candidate being responsible for measuring engineering efficiency, identifying areas of improvement and implementing change with respect to the Product Engineering function. The Staff Product Engineering will support products such as GoLINC, ECP, Electronic Braking, Monitoring, Trainlink, LIG, OTA, EOA and others.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with product management to scope the engineering efforts associated with future commercial opportunities and ingest the opportunity into the engineering process

  • Coordinate engineering estimations by working with the various engineering disciplines to collect inputs, roll up the totals for the project and deliver the completed estimate to product management for incorporation into the deal review summary

  • Develop schedules during the estimation process

  • Standardize quotes by reviewing common asks of the engineering department and developing estimations that can be reused to enable a quick turn around time for low complexity opportunities

  • Investigate modularizing engineering estimations to create unique solutions and expedite the estimation process

  • As proposal opportunities are approaching or exceed their expiration date, work with the commercial and product teams to determine next steps for the opportunity

  • Forecast resource demand based on estimations and monitor timing of estimations to ensure resource alignment

  • Demonstrate leadership skills by facilitating and influencing key stake holders to achieve tender milestones

  • Interface with external to DOSE internal to Wabtec organizations such as the Trip Optimizer, Locotrol, locomotive, services, transit and other business units within Wabtec to facilitate quotation of projects that involve multiple product lines

  • Represent DOSE to other internal Wabtec organizations during estimation process

  • Serve as an enabler within the organization to bring stakeholders from multiple functions together to work collaboratively

  • Embrace culture of collaboration, innovation, customer centricity, safety, compliance, cost & schedule

  • Manage program execution of engineering team to deliver on time, within budget, and meet contractual obligations

  • Highlight dependencies to Project Management Organization (PMO) and escalate engineering impeding items

  • Utilize a data driven approach to analyze engineering headcount demand and capacity for the Product Engineering organization

  • Monitoring and reviewing engineering process performance indicators and governance indicators. Identify and implement actions for continuous improvement.

  • Drive operational tools and process compliance for items such as time vouchering, engineering artifact generation and repository

  • Report to leadership on project and organization status

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of 10 years hands-on design, requirements development and implementation experience involving; Engineering Systems, Hardware / Software Engineering, and/or Data Information Systems.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with communication systems

  • Experience in computer networking

  • Experience in software deployment and configuration management

  • Proven ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science

  • Locomotive Systems Design Experience

  • Railroad Industry Experience

  • Prior system design experience with large-scale software and electronics-based projects

  • Experience working in the Agile Development Environment

  • Self-starter with the ability to lead design efforts with minimum supervision

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Knowledge of AAR and CENELEC standards for the rail industry
