Job Title: Specimen Processor

Job Description

Specimen processors take incoming samples and input data into the computer system, creating labeling for samples. They will handle enclosed samples with PPE but do not directly touch open swabs or perform tests on the samples.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, identify, label, and process specimens as required for processing.

  • Label specimen containers, slides, and any other materials submitted by the client.

  • Handle all specimen types.

  • Multi-task between different types of requisitions.

  • Maintain departmental production goals to ensure hourly specimen flow to the labs is consistent.

  • Review, transcribe, and enter demographic and specimen data into the laboratory information system with 100% accuracy.

  • Recognize specimen problems and refer to designated personnel.

  • File requisition slips, glass slides, and paraffin blocks, assisting Laboratory Aides as needed.

  • Perform supply maintenance and clean-up duties to help workflow and efficiency.

Essential Skills

  • Data entry

  • Specimen processing

  • High school diploma/GED

  • Passing typing test of at least 7500 keystrokes per hour with 95% accuracy or higher

  • Previous laboratory experience

  • Ability to work overnight

  • Comfortable with human samples

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Medical scribe experience is a plus

  • 30 WPM typing speed

Work Environment

You will be working in a large specimen processing room, logging patient information on sample tubes and ensuring data accuracy. You will work with over 80 people on the night shift to support work volume. 90-100% of your shift will be spent typing and sitting at a computer. Safety precautions will be taken, but due to space limitations, there will not be 6 feet social distancing. Growth opportunities within one of the country's top reference labs are available, allowing you to move to technician roles if you have a degree in sciences or to lab assistant roles in different specialties or other groups within the company to start a career.
