The Headlines:

In the role of Environment Pollution Control Technician working in Elkton, VA you will be part of the Utilities team. You will assure continuous and efficient operation of the Wastewater Treatment plant by operating, maintaining, and improving all equipment and process parameters in a manner that achieves manufacturing outputs and expectations.

The Responsibilities:

  • Checks operational status of wastewater treatment systems for effective and continuous operation.

  • Controls operation of equipment and systems making effective changes for operational control.

  • Reviews Delta V operation and development, data acquisition, performs analysis, updates computer reports, maintains logs, and controls systems to ensure uninterrupted and efficient service to the plant.

  • Collects operational data by sampling and auditing the wastewater plant process, influent feeder streams, biosolids, and effluent discharge for levels of chemical composition. Utilizes routine and non-routine tests to assay status.

  • Performs operational control calculations based on all collected data. Records, tracks, analyzes, correlates, and reports data from testing, control devices and process monitoring, to profile current conditions and predict potential problems utilizing plant database.

  • Monitors the microbiological level of the plant through daily profiles to determine the relative stability of the biological process based upon seasonality and loading to the plant.

  • Design experiments to determine the affect of physical changes, chemical additions, polymer additions, surfactants, bio-engineered microlife, nutrients, sludge additions and brewery cleaning chemicals to the overall chemical composition of the plant and composition of the microlife. Must continuously seek methods to improve plant efficiency and effluent quality.

  • Interact with chemical suppliers to determine efficiency and effectiveness of chemicals and the overall effect to the process.

  • Perform specific tests such as BOD, COD, TOC, nutrients, pH, D.O., jar tests, suspended solids, Mallory settle-ometer and other analysis to perform daily analysis as well as special analysis for specific tests or conditions.

  • The incumbent is responsible for staying current in technical information relating to waste treatment operation, maintenance, chemical and microbiological analysis. Must be familiar with procedures, regulations and permits issued by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

  • Actively involved in the plant’s Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team (HAZMAT) and required to attend all associated training and certification classes. Will be required to use SCBA respirators and other safety equipment required for confined space entry.

  • Responsible for correctly following the waste accumulation and handling rules established for waste storage areas as specified in Waste Generator and Hazardous Communication training. Must be knowledgeable of the waste streams handled and the hazards associated with each waste stream and process in and near the workplace. This knowledge must include an understanding of proper emergency response procedures relative to the hazards where the incumbent works.

  • Performs a variety of duties in the routine, preventative and emergency maintenance repairs of equipment. Duties include but not limited to the mixed skillset at near Journeyman level of electrician, equipment mechanic and plumber.

  • Ability to use Statistical Process Control (SPC) to monitor and correct processes.

  • Partners with Process Leader and Training Specialist to implement training plans.

  • Onboards new team members according to the standard onboarding process.

  • Responsible for communicating and coordinating activities with operations, quality, asset care, and other specialists as required.

  • Responsible for interacting with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, independent laboratories, chemical and parts suppliers, contractors and area farmers.

  • Responsible for and dedicated to personal and team safety in relation to completion of tasks and duties.

  • Responsible for assisting in the implementation and workings of WCSC 2.0 while performing work.

  • Partners with teams and safety council members to identify and highlight unsafe work practices and escalate/correct with a sense of urgency.

The Other Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Waste Treatment Operation or Equivalent Technical Degree/Certification and Experience in Mechanical/Electrical Systems and/or Class III Virginia State Wastewater Certification

  • Knowledge of MS Office, SPC, Data Analysis

  • 3+ years of laboratory or operational experience in a wastewater treatment plant, preferably a brewery or an industrial environment conducive to production operations.

  • Ability to work full-time, all shifts, all schedules, and all days of the week to include weekends and holidays.

  • Ability to be called in for emergency coverage and work overtime as necessary.

  • Preferred Class II Virginia State Wastewater Certification HAZMAT certification or achieve certification within the agreed upon timeframe
