Here’s the scoop - Summary

The Governance & Controls Manager is a key role that ensures proper internal controls and processes are in place throughout the business. The purpose of this role is to partner with the business and critical stakeholders throughout the organization to design an effective and efficient internal control structure in a rapidly changing environment, embed digital processes and automation into the monitoring of controls, assess whether the business has gaps in internal controls and support designing solutions to mitigate those gaps. This position partners with multiple stakeholders, and is concerned with efficiency, compliance and internal controls.

This role has a hybrid schedule with a combination of work from home and from our Edmonton corporate office and reports to the Corporate Controller.

What a typical day looks like:

  • Business partnering to assess, design and monitor an efficient and effective internal control environment across the company. Drive consistency and best practice in internal control design and monitor internal control effectiveness.

  • Develop and/or implement digital solutions to effectively monitor and report on the company’s internal control effectiveness.

  • Monitor governance & controls KPIs and drive continuous improvement.

  • Design efficient and effective solutions to mitigate deficiencies identified.

  • Contribute to finance governance & controls roadmap, including Internal Control Excellence (ICE) deployment, finance manual upgrades.

  • Drive & follow-though division governance, control priorities & roadmap deployment, implementing controls and governance related training and tools.

  • Stakeholder management, from those with little to no internal controls knowledge to experts.

  • Facilitation, driving alignment and clarity between internal/external audit and our business partners.

  • Design appropriate safeguards to the ensure the integrity of financial statements and reporting considering digitization and changing ways of working in the organization.

  • Address financial policy questions related to internal controls and compliance.

  • Remediate and report instances of fraud or non-compliance within the company and process for mitigation.

  • As a Finance Leadership Team member demonstrate business acumen and leadership to the broader organization through asking questions, demonstrating curiosity and challenging status-quo in the spirit of continuous improvement and fostering a high-performance collaboration environment.

  • Ensure the strict confidentiality and privacy of the Company’s financial records.

What are we looking for?

  • CPA professional accounting designation and a related university degree

  • 3-5 years of experience in audit; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.

  • Experience in the areas of business analysis, business transformation, organizational effectiveness, and business process improvement.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to communicate well with individuals at all levels of the organization.

  • Strong analytical skills through experience working on complex transactions.

  • Strong policy, process and control-orientation and experience with the ability to drive standards.

  • Experience with documenting, evaluating, and testing controls.

  • Experience with identifying, tracking and resolving control gaps.

  • Business partnership experience, and an ability to create control/process solutions.

  • Knowledge and expertise of accounting systems and internal controls. Digitally savvy with strong user and problem-centric approach.

  • Self-directed, with demonstrated initiative and ability to follow through and complete overlapping projects.

  • Demonstrated integrity and professionalism with ability to work successfully both independently and within a team environment.

  • Ability to respect and maintain matters of a confidential nature, including information regarding monetary transactions.

  • Some extended hours of work may be required.

  • Some travel may be required.
