Position Summary

The Center for Survivors is a Confidential Program at Michigan State University. The Michigan State University Center for Survivors Safe Place Shelter Social Worker Assistant position provides a safe, clean, and supportive environment at the Shelter for people experiencing interpersonal violence. This position establishes effective working relationships with residents, staff, the community, and other stakeholders. The position also assists advocates in providing case management, supportive services, and advocacy services to shelter residents and their children, including obtaining community resources, housing, financial assistance, employment, health care and transportation. Services include crisis intervention, supportive services and advocacy, and outreach and education on interpersonal violence. This position serves survivors of relationship violence, stalking, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and co-survivors. The Safe Place Shelter Social Worker Assistant position has ethical, professional, and legal responsibilities to maintain records regarding work with clients and to protect client confidentiality in accordance with guidelines set by VOCA/VAWA, MSU, the State of Michigan, and other professional associations.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinates all scheduling for the 24/7 operations of the Safe Place Shelter.

  2. Provides on-boarding and on-site supervision for volunteers working at Safe Place shelter.

  3. Participate in a shared case management system that supports collaboration and consultation.

  4. Ensures compliance, accuracy, and quality of shelter documentation.

  5. Collaborates with Strategic Support Team Supervisor and the leadership team to develop and implement policies, procedures related to shelter operations and residential clients.

  6. Coordinates and oversees the daily operational activities to deliver timely and effective trauma-informed services to clients.

  7. Shares on-call (standby) responsibilities with other full-time staff, attends to client emergencies and after-hours intakes.

  8. Assists survivors with completing Michigan Crime Victims Compensation applications.

  9. Supports residential clients with accessing resources, basic needs, groceries, appointments, etc.

  10. Assists residents in completing applications for housing, locating affordable housing, and coordinating with the Housing Assessment and Resource Agency for housing vouchers and programs.

  11. Assists residents with obtaining transportation resources. May provide transportation for residents in housing search activities, moving assistance, medical appointments, employment search, etc.

  12. Provides conflict resolution and de-escalation for Shelter residents when needed.

  13. Provides crisis supportive services to survivors.

  14. Coordinates referrals to services in the community when necessary.

  15. Responsible for coordinating with UHW Safety and Operations Manager regarding the ongoing and preventative maintenance of physical shelter site including emergency procedures, fire drills, routine inspections, sanitation, janitorial needs, security and safety.

  16. Manages routine maintenance, such as ordering, stocking and inventory of supplies.

  17. Coordinates community donations and disbursement to clients.

  18. Oversees the food, inventory, and supply needs of the facility and coordinates procurement of such.

  19. Assists advocates with implementing client's service delivery plans.

  20. Completes other miscellaneous VOCA Grant, University, and program documentation as needed.

  21. Other duties as assigned.
