The Director of Science, Engineering, Technology & STEAM Program will serve under the direction of their Assistant Superintendent for Instruction as a member of the leadership team to foster and facilitate a culturally responsive and inclusive community that empowers all students to develop their unique potential and thrive as learners, citizens, and leaders in a diverse global community. Our ideal candidate must have the followingqualifications:

  • A minimum of five (5) years successful experience in education, including teaching, supervision, and/or administration.

  • A valid New York State Certificate as a School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS), School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL).

  • Administrative or other leadership experience in Science; leadership in engineering, technology, and or STEAM is also preferred.

The successful candidate can expect the followingresponsibilities:

Curriculum/Instruction:

  • Provides leadership and coordination for district K-12 science, engineering and technology and STEAM programs that are aligned to New York State Learning Standards and grade level performance indicators.

  • Coordinates district wide efforts for curriculum, assessment and instruction in the K-12 science, engineering and technology and STEAM programs.

  • Supervises the development and evaluation of all instruction delivery programs and collaborates with other departments and schools to ensure congruency with district needs, expectations, written and tested standards, and alignment to the Strategic Plan.

  • Actively integrates the principles of the Culturally Responsive & Sustaining Education Framework into the curriculum in support of diversity, equity and inclusion.

  • Facilitates and supervises curriculum and assessment team work.

  • Provides assistance with the integration of appropriate technology to enhance science, engineering and technology curricula in accordance with the District Technology Plan.

  • Works with the Curriculum Council to initiate the development of new courses, revise current courses, and evaluate the quality of the WCSD curriculum standards in science, engineering and technology education.

  • Ensures provision of necessary support services to students based on individual student needs, coordinating with diverse stakeholders (including but not limited to special education teachers, ENL co-teach teams, and district special education administrators & staff) to ensure delivery of required and effective services to students with special needs.

  • Prepares presentations to the Board of Education as requested.

  • Orders supplies and equipment for science, engineering, technology and STEAM program education.

  • Reviews/recommends textbooks for adoption to the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, in conjunction with building principals.

  • Actively promotes positive character education activities that are curriculum based.

  • Collaborates with the Instructional Technology team and supervisor of libraries to ensure that appropriate reference materials are available to support the K-12 science, engineering and technology and STEAM programs.

  • Assists with the integration of appropriate technology to K-12 science, engineering and technology and STEAM curricula in accordance with the District Technology Plan.

  • Coordinates the use of BOCES science kits and BOCES student experiences.

  • Coordinates Project Lead the Way.

  • Oversees the District Planetarium activities

  • Serves as a liaison for new information for assigned disciplines from the State Education Department and other professional organizations to Williamsville teachers and administrators.

  • Seeks out and maintains partnerships with higher education institutions to provide concurrent enrollment opportunities for students.

  • Provides oversight and coordination of summer school programs in relevant areas.

  • Provides oversight and coordination of K-12 science, engineering and technology and STEAM curricula in summer school programs.

Management:

  • Provides supervision to ensure that the district resources are managed efficiently and appropriately.

  • Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and develops meaningful, engaging professional relationships with staff, faculty and students.

  • Engages in courageous conversations with every teacher about growth areas in practice and assist in the development of targeted Teacher Improvement Plans (TIP) when appropriate.

  • Prepares and manages departmental annual budgets in relevant areas.

  • Attends meetings of District leadership and other meetings associated with other District and building matters to gain an awareness of and contribute effectively to the development of the entire school program.

Assessment Reporting:

  • Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of documents and reports as required by local, state and federal agencies related to science, engineering and technology education.

  • Provides oversight and responsibility for administrative and scoring of all NYS science assessments.

  • Facilitates the design and implementation of common District final examinations and other end-of-course performance assessments, as appropriate.

  • Collects and analyzes student performance data to determine if students are meeting the curricular expectations; presents the analyses to appropriate personnel and assists teachers and administrators in understanding and using assessment information for the benefit of students.

  • Uses data to improve instruction which will entail collecting data as required by the State, providing professional development to staff on the effective use of using data to improve instruction.

  • Benchmarks high achievement worldwide in order to introduce relevant program improvement.

Supporting Schools:

  • Meets and communicates with teachers on a regular and planned basis to assure K-12 program articulation and continuity.

    • Assists building leadership in the implementation of related curriculum and programs, extra-curricular activities and professional development opportunities for science, engineering and technology education.
  • Assists building leadership in the evaluation of personnel and observes teachers as part of the teacher evaluation process.

  • Assists building leadership in the recruitment and hiring of highly qualified new teachers as they learn about the curriculum, program, and available District resources.

  • Works cooperatively and collectively with principals, teachers, and other instructional personnel (as appropriate) to ensure that instructional programs and services are coordinated in the schools and are administered uniformly and equitably.

Professional Learning:

  • Meets and communicates on a regular and planned basis with District teachers to ensure effective implementation of programs and initiatives and to assure PK-12 program articulation and continuity.

  • Continually updates skills and knowledge in order to make significant contributions to all aspects of the District science, engineering and technology education programs.

  • Develops and presents appropriate professional learning for professional staff members referencing the goals of the Strategic Plan, Board of Education, and the District Professional Learning Plan.

  • Supports new teachers as they learn about the curriculum, program, and available District resources.

  • Assists in the planning and implementation of the District's professional learning opportunities and model the personal and professional expectations held for the district personnel by demonstrating a commitment to growth and renewal.
