Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Veterans Resource Center is to engage fully our NCCU veterans, Military personnel, and their families by advocating, providing, and coordinating the necessary support services for veteran student success. The Veteran Affairs Coordinator (VAC) works collaboratively with administrators, faculty, and students in promoting student academic and personal achievement within a student-centered environment. Additionally, the VAC coordinates a comprehensive and collaborative campus-wide effort to maximize the recruitment, retention, and graduation of veterans, military personnel and their families.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide critical and direct program oversight. This position will manage all Veteran Affairs applications and packets, separation documents, course load alignment to eligible benefits and benefit certification. This position will provide autonomous oversight for the outreach, implementation, and management functions for Veterans Affairs. This position serves as an institutional and regulatory liaison with federal, state, or local stakeholders, and is a program policy expert.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of Veterans Affairs Program; knowledge of veterans and interpreting federal regulations; knowledge of developing publications and marketing materials; knowledge of Student Banner or an equivalent system; knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) Applications; knowledge of planning and developing educational programs and projects; knowledge of office and record management; ability to review and ensure consistency in standards across projects and academic years; ability to work independently and collegially with team members with little or no supervision; to take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion; to learn, interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions; to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving; to plan, prioritize and organize workflow; ability to work flexible schedules; excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication skills, excellent editing skills; great interpersonal skills to interact effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals in a high pressure environment.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree; or an equivalent combination of a Bachelor’s degree and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Military Veteran Preferred
Experience working with Veterans and interpreting Federal Regulations
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Managing Work Processes
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Provide leadership and set the direction for the department or unit to achieve organizational goals. Have the ability to actively seek input to identify best practices; ability to design, finalize and implement changes that affect a broad range of constituents.
Serve as NCCU’s primary Veterans Certifying Official and will be responsible for monitoring student progress and reporting any and all changes in student enrollment status in accordance with Veterans Affairs guidelines.
Responsible for searching out and building relationships with “benefit eligible” active duty military, military dependents and veterans to promote NCCU programs in order to increase awareness.
Supervise Veteran Student Workers each semester or academic year.
Function Decision Making

Independently initiate or implement new approaches and policies to resolve non-standard problems and issues of broad scope and complexity.
Provide accurate information regarding academic programs, application requirements and enrollment procedures to the student while exercising the highest levels of integrity in customer service and maintain continual contact with the student throughout their journey at NCCU to increase retention.
Function Coordination - Operations
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Ability to direct, evaluate and implement improvements to maximize organizational goal achievement Ability to develop and oversee processes, procedures and programs to enhance organizational goal achievement.
Responsible for keeping current with program changes and updates as it relates to the Veteran Affairs; this is to also include a working knowledge of US Military reimbursement policies and procedures as well as the reporting of program changes to the Veterans Affairs.
Coordinates and conducts campus tours/appointments; coordinating and hosting receptions, open houses, and other events related to recruitment and retention of military service members.
Function Project Management
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Ensure adequate, accurate and timely student records are created and maintained during the Admissions process and throughout the Military student’s career here at NCCU to include but not limited to: admissions documents, VA paperwork and VA certifications.
Develop new, innovative approaches to address and improve current and future programs, processes and procedures.
Develop multifaceted reports for use in a variety of areas within student services.
Distribute promotional materials via Career, Education and Military fairs; spread the word of mouth and otherwise boosting military presence here on campus.
Function Client/Customer Service
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Ability to proactively and independently troubleshoot issues within program area. Ability to make exceptions to policies and procedures that may have wide impact on other program areas.
Facilitate interdepartmental communications between Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Services, Student Accounts, Office of the Registrar, and Academics for the purpose of enhancing and streamlining the Admissions Process for military students and their dependents and thus creating a positive atmosphere.
Cultivate relationships with school educators, Command ESO’s and military facilities in order to gain access to more potential students.
Serve as a military liaison to provide streamlined assistance to military students and their dependents in NCCU education programs in order to promote efficiency and reduce transitional stress on military students.
