Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

Shepard Library serves as the main academic support unit to provide library and information services to our students , faculty, staff, community and distance education patrons.

Primary Purpose of Position

The James E. Shepard Memorial Library at North Carolina Central University welcomes applications for the position of Coordinator of Evening Services within the Research and Instruction Services Department. This is a full time Librarian position.

The primary purpose of this position is to hire a professional librarian to provide information literacy instruction and one-on one research consultation during our evening hours to our patrons and distance education students. The incumbent will help plan special evening events, develop workshops ( in person and virtual) that highlight library resources, and serve as a library liaison to several departments. Shepard Library has a merged service point that is co-managed by the Research and Instruction Services team and Information Technology. The Coordinator of Evening Services Librarian will manage this service desk in the evening and supervise student workers. S/he undertakes liaison duties with the following departments: Public Administration, Social Work and Distance Education (liaison duties may change based on coverage needs).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of new and emerging information technologies, instructional and research methodologies, and trends in academic libraries, scholarly communication, and higher education.

The ability to think creatively and problem solve effectively, working in a collaborative fashion with a team of colleagues.

Excellent organization, analytical, planning, interpersonal, oral and written communications skills.

Must have strong commitment to diversity.

Must be innovative, self-motivated, service oriented, and resourceful.

A commitment to ongoing professional development.

Experience using library support products such as Springshare products (LibGuides, Lib Answers, LibCal, LibWizard) WebEx, RefWorks, Endnote and SirsiDynix

Experience providing information literacy instruction and developing and facilitating workshop.

Minimum Education/Experience

Master of Library Science or the equivalent degree from an ALA accredited program. At least two years or related experience, preferably in an academic library delivering information literacy instruction and reference assistance to a diverse user population..

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Function Instructional

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Under the direction of the Head of Research and Instruction Services, the incumbent will:

  1. Oversee, coordinate and continually improve the library’s evening instruction and research services quality level and operation effectiveness.

  2. Collaborate with faculty throughout the academic year to develop effective one-shot instruction sessions.

  3. Responsible for collection development for assigned liaison departments.

  4. Recommend and develop workshops that can be incorporated into evening service.

  5. Create and update subject guides and help manage the library’s virtual reference services which includes: Chat Reference Service, Text Service, answering questions via Twitter and e-mail.

  6. Other duties as assigned.

Function Research

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Assist in the articulation of strategic goals and objectives for the unit and develop specific methods for achieving them.

Coordinate consistent data collection for evening activities.

Providing research assistance for members of the college community.

Function Administrative

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Hire, train and evaluate student workers.

Communicate and participate equally with colleagues in ITS and Research & Instruction who are also responsible for providing services in this area, working together with them to develop and articulate policies and procedures which are consistent with University standards to achieve a high level of service excellence.

Collaborate with Access Services to cultivate an environment of service excellence and standardization.

Develop effective working relationship with the equivalent ITS service desk managers as they will be co-staffing this merged service point together.

Serve on university and Triangle Research Library committees as needed.
