Lilly Chemist – Quality Control (QC) Durham, North Carolina

The Chemist performs accurate and timely testing of routine laboratory samples, including in-process, batch release, and stability samples, in accordance with appropriate GMP and safety guidelines. The Chemist may also support analytical testing related to method implementation activities, such as method verifications and method transfers. The Chemist will perform laboratory testing techniques including, but not limited to, UV-VIS, HPLC, TOC, Device testing, Turbidity, Osmolality, Conductivity, pH, and wet chemistry. Additionally, the Chemist will perform review of laboratory data, as needed. Will review and interpret results and perform review of laboratory data. The Chemist will author change controls, investigations, and CAPA, as required. The Chemist will engage in laboratory safety and continuous improvement initiates on a routine basis. Additionally, the chemist will be required to support inspection readiness activities as will be responsible for maintaining compliance with all company and regulatory requirements.

Key Objectives and Deliverables

  • Accurately and safely perform analytical test methods or related support activities as per procedures or protocols.

  • Accurately record data in reports or LIMS in accordance with laboratory procedures, standards, and GMP requirements.

  • Recognizes deviations from procedures, methods, etc., and initiates investigations as required.

  • Verify (SPV) analytical data generated by other analysts within the lab as required.

  • Adhere to all Environmental, Health, and Safety standards.

  • Identify and communicate opportunities for improvement initiatives in daily work activities.

  • Troubleshoot equipment and methods as required.

  • Work in a diverse group with members of various levels of industry experience.

  • Support lean lab and 5S initiatives.

  • Understand the scientific principles required for testing of drug substances and drug product, including the interaction of the chemistry and lab equipment.

  • Provide technical support for non-routine (e.g., deviation) investigations.

  • Maintain inventory of all supplies and consumables for the laboratory.

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor (4-year college) degree in Chemistry, Biology or Microbiology and relevant experience in a pharmaceutical chemistry lab.

  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.

Additional Skills / Preferences

  • Experience with a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) system and Empower®.

  • Trackwise® experience (change controls, Investigations, Activity Planning).

  • Laboratory experience with HPLC and CE instruments.

  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical thinking skills.

  • Understanding of statistical tools and analysis.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and networking skills.

  • Experience in a GMP QC lab environment.

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communications skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.

  • Experience with lean lab and the 5S concept.

  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis (fishbone, 5 why’s, Causal Factor, Fault Tree analysis).

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a part of a Team.

Additional Information

  • Applicant will initially work 8-hour day shift Monday through Friday (8:00 am to 5:00 pm) for approximately 2 months, then transition to 10-hour day shift – Sunday through Wednesday (8:00 am to 7:00 pm).

  • May require support outside of regular schedule in support of continuous (24/7) manufacturing operations.

  • Applicant will work in various areas within the site. Some allergens are present in the parenteral plant. Mobility requirements and exposure to allergens should be considered when applying for this position.

  • Tasks may require repetitive motion (e.g., keyboarding).

  • Minimal travel required.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is

$63,000 - $162,800

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
