JOB TITLE: Teen Arts Council Member

DEPARTMENT: Education Programs Department

REPORTS TO: Manager, Education Programs

CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Temporary

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: Project-Based

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Associate Educator, Teen Arts Council members will work with diverse peers from tri-county high schools and alongside museum professionals to design and implement relevant and meaningful programs for metro Detroit teens.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in all Teen Council planning meetings, events, and activities as a collaborative and creative team member.

  • Attend an average of 8-15 hours of after school meetings per month on various items including, but not limited to planning and reflecting on events & programs, engaging in learning activities, and sharing updates and information.

  • Work as an ambassador for DIA events and programs in schools and communities.

  • Represent metro Detroit teens through authentic input in DIA teen program design and implementation.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Must be entering 10th or 11th grade during the school year of hire and a resident of the museum’s Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne County service area to be eligible.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated collaboration skills to work across departments and divisions internally and with diverse stakeholders externally.

  • Demonstrated ability to speak publicly, including presenting or sharing information in a clear, effective, and engaging manner suited to the audience.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with attention to detail and produce accurate results.

  • Demonstrated skills to prioritize and complete multiple tasks to meet deadlines and goals.

  • Ability to operate as a spokesperson for DIA Teen programs & events.

  • Knowledge or interest in the arts and humanities.

  • Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution, and recommend appropriate course of action.

  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Microsoft Office 365.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.

    2. In an essay of 500 words or less, please describe at least three attributes that would be most helpful to a teen leader in motivating and inspiring their peers at school. Why do you believe those attributes to be the most helpful?

    3. Why should we select you to be a member of the DIA's Teen Council ?
