Henry Ford Health System Leader - Biomed Equipment Technician | Detroit, MI in Detroit, Michigan

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible for all Clinical Engineering operations and staff as assigned by the department manager / director. Oversees the implementation of management directives and initiatives. Assists manager / director in department planning, budget preparation and other management functions. Participates on committees as required. Coordinates the design, construction, and implementation of installations and special projects. Performs inspections, safety evaluations, performance assurance, repair, overhaul, and cleaning of medical and supportive equipment. Communicates regularly with internal / external customers and is required to assure successful resolution of equipment related problems. Must be able to perform all duties and responsibilities of a Biomedical Equipment Technician II. Provides support throughout the Henry Ford Hospital System through excellent customer service skills.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises Clinical Engineering staff for assigned area / region.

  • Schedules work assignments

  • Ensures that all work completed is in compliance with established standards.

  • Oversees preventive maintenance programs.

  • Provides staff training and development.

  • Assists in the evaluation of assigned staff.

  • Performs scheduled and corrective maintenance on high level medical equipment following appropriate departmental procedures, utilizing appropriate test equipment and repair tools.

  • Requests repair parts and special equipment as needed; orders specific parts to maintain proper inventory levels.

  • Evaluates and provides technical advice regarding purchase of biomedical equipment.

  • Coordinates special projects, installations, and incoming inspections for verification of equipment specifications and safety on new equipment prior to use.

  • Provides technical information and in-service on the proper function of equipment to System personnel.

  • Practices Universal Precautions to assure that infection control is maximized.

  • Assists with the formulation and revision of departmental procedures.

  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and orderly work area at all times.

  • Interfaces with departmental computer system as required.

  • Maintains documentation in accordance with department policy. Submits monthly progress reports as required.

  • Schedules and supervises calibration of test equipment on a regular basis.

  • Stay current on regulations and governing agency standards.

  • Complete assignments and goals as established by department manager.

  • Deals with leadership, direct reports, co-workers and customers with care and respect.

  • Attends hospital meetings as required and represents the department in conjunction with other hospital departments and staff.

  • Assumes delegated responsibilities.

  • Participates in department rotation providing 24 hour on–call coverage for System.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of an Associate's Degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology, an Associate's Degree in Electronic Technology, or equivalent education and training required. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology required.

  • Seven (7) years experience as a Biomedical Equipment Technician in general and critical areas of a health care facility preferred.

  • International Committee Certification (I.C.C.) is preferred.

  • Proven mechanical aptitude and analytical skills for understanding electronic circuitry and for trouble-shooting biomedical / electronic equipment.

  • Proven use of basic electronic test equipment.

  • Eye/hand coordination to work with finely detailed electromechanical parts and systems.

  • Demonstrated computer skills.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to learn new technology through applying existing knowledge and skill set.

  • Physical ability to move and lift equipment as required. Valid driver's license required.

  • Versatile in finding resources maintaining quality and keeping costs low.
