The LSA is a nonpartisan central legislative staff state agency of around 100 employees serving members and committees of the Iowa General Assembly. The LSA’s workforce spans three divisions and multiple offices where individuals contribute their unique expertise and talents to advance a shared mission of serving the Iowa General Assembly in a nonpartisan manner.

LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION OFFICE ASSISTANT

The full-time position involves providing supervision of the tour guide operation, coordinating with the operation of the Legislative Information Office, providing information to the public relating to actions and procedures of the General Assembly, assisting in the dissemination of nonpartisan materials, conducting tours of the State Capitol, supervising and scheduling tour guide operations, communicating with groups interested in touring the State Capitol, supervising formal communications with legislators and staff, conducting research of historical information, creating and displaying educational displays relating to the State Capitol and the history of the State of Iowa, assisting in the management of the gift shop, and assisting in the development and maintaining of gift shop inventory.

Partisan political activity and legislative issue advocacy are strictly prohibited. Some overtime is required with partial compensatory time provided.

Qualifications, Skills, and Ability:

  • Graduate of an institution of higher education or equivalent experience, which emphasizes the ability to communicate.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and nonpartisan manner.

  • Ability to understand legislative and other governmental procedures in this and other states and explain to the public in writing and orally those procedures.

  • Knowledge of computer systems.

  • Organizational skills.

Duties:

  • Assist in providing information to the public relating to actions and procedures of the General Assembly.

  • Assist in the dissemination of nonpartisan legislative materials and in the dissemination of nonpartisan materials developed by the Senate and House of Representatives and other legislative and government agencies.

  • Assist interns in gathering information designed to inform the public about legislative actions and procedures.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

The ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and nonpartisan manner; the ability to understand and effectively communicate legislative and other governmental procedures; and knowledge of computer systems are required.

A bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
