Principal Financial Group Accountant- Investment Accounting in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

We’re looking for an Accountant to join our Investment Accounting team. In this role, you’ll work on the Investment Reporting team and primarily perform monthly and quarterly reporting for investments. This team is big on efficiency and automation, so someone interested in developing their skills or previous experience with tools like Power BI or Power Query would be a good fit. The ideal candidate for this role is someone that can work independently, dig into issues/data, and become a subject matter expert that others in the department, team and company seek out.

  • A highly collaborative team working closely with the Investment Accounting Operations Team, the Policy/Research Team, Corporate Accounting, and the General Account Portfolio Management team to assess and implement the reporting for new asset strategies.

  • Apply knowledge of accounting standards and expertise to tackle business problems, seeking guidance for new or sophisticated situations.

  • Financial Analysis and Reporting: using specialized knowledge and expertise perform accounting analysis and reporting of financial transactions of complexity in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), statutory accounting principles (SAP), tax regulations, or other regulatory guidance. This includes but is not limited to: assisting with implementing new accounting and reporting standards and performing complex transaction processing and exception research/handling.

  • Compliance and Controls: assist in the development and establishment of processes to monitor compliance and efficiency of financial controls in line with the organization's methodology and regulatory reporting requirements. Interact with external auditors as part of the annual external audits and assist with requests throughout the year.

  • Management Reporting: develop business unit reporting systems for management, project or performance reporting and implement processes to deliver information to meet regulatory timing and management needs. Interpret financial reports and accounts, identify and evaluate risks and opportunities and present findings to management for decision making.

  • Projects: work with project owners to ensure accounting and internal control objectives are met through the design and implementation of new products and/or systems. Carry out testing to ensure the system or process is operating as intended. Escalate any findings/variances/issues as needed. Identify and implement operational excellence projects, providing business requirements for new systems or improvements.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance or equivalent experience required

  • A minimum of 2 years of accounting experience

  • Investment knowledge, statutory accounting and reporting experience is preferred

  • CPA or other applicable certifications preferred

  • Proven analytical, problem solving, time management, interpersonal and communication skills are required.

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$71250 - $95950 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

This role offers an in-office and hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek) work arrangement in Des Moines, IA.
