About Us

The Colorado Mental Health Institute in Fort Logan (CMHHFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 138 adult inpatient beds and over six treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. Medical services, occupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.

About this Work Unit:

Each treatment unit provides psychiatric treatment services to adult clients through the use of a Milieu Treatment Program based on models of milieu therapy and group therapy. The focus of treatment is ongoing assessment and interventions designed to assist individual clients in resolving the specific problems that brought them to the hospital and to return them to the least restrictive environment in the community. Approaches are strength-based, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented enabling patients to learn more effective coping and living skills in order to function more effectively in the community upon discharge from the hospital. The psychiatric care and treatment modalities include milieu management, group therapy, activity therapy, health education, and medication management with the goal of providing a consistent and safe environment for clients and assisting them with the amelioration of presenting problems and symptoms and improving problem-solving and coping skills.

This position provides a therapeutic approach to the psychiatric care and treatment of adults with acute and chronic mental illness. Primary responsibilities are the application of knowledge, expertise, and experience to establish a therapeutic relationship with the patient and provide safe and effective patient care. Mental Health Clinicians utilize psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery principles and techniques in all aspects of their job duties. This position works under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse and assists with psychiatric nursing care of mentally ill patients; observes, reports, and documents patient’s behavior, participates in designing and implementing patient treatment plans; monitors and intervenes to ensure a safe and therapeutic patient milieu. Provides immediate crisis intervention when indicated. Serves as a resource to the team regarding the implementation of Recovery Principles.

Primary Job Duties:

Provide Therapeutic Patient Care

  • Anticipates and recommends when to initiate interventions at the appropriate level while adhering to nursing standards and hospital policies and procedures.

  • Oversees milieu management, and recommends when to report any patient care concerns to a Registered Nurse.

  • Advocates for patients' needs and identifies how to help them achieve their goals.

  • Recommends the need to advocate for a hygiene program for a gravely disabled patient with poor ADLs.

    Milieu Management

  • Recommends the most appropriate group facilitation techniques for the milieu environment and current patient population.

  • Recommends how to structure the environment to ensure safety, monitor for and remove unsafe items, and set limits with patients as needed.

  • Recommends the most appropriate strengths-based language and decides what pertinent information will be documented in a patient’s record for shift progress notes.

  • Recommends how to appropriately mentor Mental Health Clinicians I and IIs in correct strategy implementation.

  • Recommends advisability of introducing topics with patients one-on-one or in groups.

    Interdisciplinary team treatment implementation

  • Recommend and collaborate with the team about a specific behavior plan that will benefit the patient and milieu while using recovery-based principles.

  • Recommends new strategies and interventions to the team, contributing input into their effectiveness.

  • Recommends, along with the patient, which interventions will be most helpful in assisting them gain autonomy, empowerment, and connection to others.

    Maintains and Updates Skills, Knowledge, Abilities and Competencies

  • Recommends and coordinates schedules to ensure attendance at departmental training and activities to improve skills in working with patients.

  • Identifies own learning needs and seeks additional information through supervision and provides training for other MHC I's and II's.

M inimum Qualifications

Experience Only:

Six (6) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to

this position

OR

Education and Experience:

A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation

related to the work assigned to this position equal to six (6) years

This experience must be clearly documented on your application.

Part-time experience will be pro-rated.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree

  • 1+ years Knowledge and Experience as Mental Health Care Clinician I at a State of Colorado Mental Health Institute.

  • Experience providing therapeutic and related services to mental health patients in a mental health setting

  • 1+ years professional inpatient mental health-care experience in a psychiatric locked/secure setting,

  • Experience developing and running treatment groups

  • Knowledge and experience with Trauma Informed Care and Recovery Principles and practices

  • Outpatient mental health experience running groups, case management etc., and

  • College or university education in nursing, psychology, sociology, human services, or education.

Highly Desirable Competencies:

  • Knowledge of oral and written communication skills,

  • Knowledge and professional inpatient mental health-care experience

  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting departmental and institutional policies and procedures,

  • Ability to work with and communicate with internal and external clients and customers to meet their needs in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner and committed to quality service,

  • Ability to perform with a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently,

  • Ability to encourage and facilitate cooperation, pride, trust, and group identity,

  • Ability to foster commitment and team spirit.

  • Ability to express information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information,

Conditions of employment:

  • Full Background - CDHS employees (all Direct contact with vulnerable persons):

CBI name check and fingerprint check, ICON Colorado court database, Medicare fraud database, Reference Checks, Professional License verification (licensure requirements), Drug Screen, CAPS (direct contact with adults – Mental Health Institutes, Regional Centers, Veterans Community Living Centers)

  • Must be 21 years of age or older

  • Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials – May be exposed to bodily fluids or caustic chemicals

  • Shift Work – may work days, evenings, or nights

  • Essential Services Designation – Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare

  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. Driver's License

  • May need to travel to other state locations; transport patients to appointments

  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicant’s prior State employment.
