Description of Job

This position is located in the Auraria Campus Police Department (ACPD) https://www.ahec.edu/services-departments/police. The AHEC Police Department provides emergency, non-emergency, technical and communications support for the Auraria Campus Community.

TheCorporalis responsible for the following duties:

Police Patrols:

  • Provides police service by patrolling the campus, responding to calls for service, investigating crimes, arresting violators, issuing traffic tickets and investigating traffic accidents.

  • Promotes public safety by preventing, detecting and identifying criminal and suspicious activity, issuing summons, making probable cause arrests and incarcerating offenders.

  • Provides police service by patrolling the campus, responding to calls for service.

  • Assist the public with non criminal emergencies such as medical emergencies, fires, hazardous materials accidents, natural disasters, stranded motorists and missing persons, as well as provide directions and information to the public.

Crime Prevention:

  • Present crime prevention, safety and law enforcement training programs to members of Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, The University of Colorado Denver and outside communities.

  • Create, design and evaluate instruction or projects related to campus safety services and programs.

  • Document all services and prepare oral and/or written reports for command staff.

Supervisory Functions:

  • Maintains statistical summaries of shift personnel for evaluations.

  • Documents shift personnel’s activities in Incident Book to assist supervisors in the evaluation process.

  • In the absence of the shift sergeant, provide supervision of officers and noncommissioned personnel on duty.

Report Writing:

  • Obtain accurate accounts of incidents by conducting interviews of victims, witnesses, complainants, and obtaining statements from suspects by conducting lawful and appropriate interrogations.

  • Writes complete and accurate reports for criminal prosecution.

Special Events:

  • Provide for orderly public events by maintaining crowd and traffic control and specialized enforcement at political rallies, demonstrations, concerts, and sporting events, as well as providing money guards and interfacing with other agencies for security for dignitaries.

Court Testimony:

  • Appear in municipal, county and district courts to offer testimony relative to the investigation of crimes and the charging of individuals with criminal and non-criminal offenses.

Emergency Management:

  • Assist Emergency Management Coordinator with Emergency Procedures and Notifications for Campus Community, which includes assisting the public with non criminal emergencies such as medical emergencies, fires, and hazardous materials accidents, natural disasters, stranded motorists and missing persons, as well as provide directions and information to the public.

  • Assist Emergency management regarding both domestic and foreign terrorist attack.

Community Relations:

  • Coordinate Crime Prevention, Community Policing and New Faculty, Staff and Student Orientations, by providing training classes.

  • Establish and continue daily community relations with the public through verbal and written interchange.

  • Give lectures and demonstrations on crime prevention and safety.

  • Represent the Police Department on the CART Committee and attend and Investigate all necessary threat assessment evaluations.

  • Assist the schools Judicial Officers with investigations and Adjudicators Hearings.

Investigating:

  • Collect and secure evidence; lifting latent prints; photographing of crime scenes; conducting neighborhood canvases; developing and following up leads; interviewing and interrogation of suspects, witnesses and victims; filing affidavits for search and arrest warrants; detection and arrest of wanted criminals.

Administrative Duties:

  • Complete all of the background information for security officers, dispatchers and officers.

  • Set up all of the pre-employment testing for all the department applicants.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification.

  • Two (2) years experience in law enforcement.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

  • Current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification, and

  • Two year of college coursework (30 semester hours) in a Criminal Justice or related field of study. Your college transcripts are required (and must be submitted with your application) if using this educational substitution.

ADDITIONAL SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Positions are subject to a background investigation in accordance with the administrative procedures of the State Personnel Director. Physical and psychological evaluations are required in accordance with section 24-31-303 (5)(b), C.R.S.

  • In order to be eligible to apply applicants must possess a valid and unencumbered Colorado Driver License.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age

  • Must be able to satisfactorily pass a background investigation, demonstrating:

  • No Felony or Domestic Violence convictions

  • No more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver license.

  • No alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and no repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten (10) years.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • After a conditional offer of employment is made, each prospective employee will be required to submit to physical, psychological and psychological examinations by a doctor or health care facility which is selected or approved by the Auraria Police Services in order to determine whether or not a prospective employee can perform the essential functions of the job. Failure to pass the physical and/or psychological evaluation will result in removal from this employment list.

  • Positions require a personal and employment background investigation which may include a polygraph interview, fingerprint check and drug screen.

  • The Background Investigation is part of the exam process. The policy of Auraria Police Services is to apply uniform standards of integrity and conduct to all employees without regard to assignment within the agency. Candidates must pass the minimum employment standards for Police Officers to continue in the examination and interviewing process.
