Carbohydrate Research Specialist- Decatur, IL

This is a salary non-exempt level position

Position Summary:

The Carbohydrate Research Specialist will be part of a team which is responsible for supporting day to day pilot scale operations for the Carbohydrate and Specialty Ingredients Group within Research and Development. The team will work with novel and legacy technologies to drive innovation across ADM’s business units.

The specialist will work directly with R&D scientists to setup, commission, and operate lab and pilot scale equipment across multiple ADM labs supporting, primarily, mixing and extrusion operations.

Responsibilities

  • Help to ensure the safety of all personnel and maintain compliance with OSHA regulations

  • Recognize environmental and safety hazards and take actions to ensure they are mitigated so as to not affect employee safety, process quality, and environmental compliance

  • Set up, operate and shut down extrusion machinery including assembling appropriate screw configurations and die plate selection, material loading and collection, disassembly and cleaning

  • Perform drying operations using industrial dryers including spray, fluidized bed, and drum variations

  • Set up and operate milling and mixing equipment including continuous mixers, ribbon blenders, jet cookers, and compounders

  • Conduct regular maintenance and cleaining of extruders and milling equipment and identify worn or damaged parts to ensure optimal performance of equipment

  • Maintain accurate equipment records to support proper maintenance and machine settings

  • Assist in training new team members in operation and maintenance of extrusion, mixing and milling equipment

  • Recognize and understand how to work with hazardous processes such as high temperature, high pressure, corrosives, flammables, steam, and hot oil.

  • Work with Engineers and Scientists to plan and execute all aspects of lab and pilot plant trials including

  • Write, modify, and update Standard Operating Procedures, Work Instructions, and Experimental Plans as results dictate.

  • Setup, troubleshoot and commission equipment

  • Monitor and operate equipment to determine experimental boundaries

  • Coordinate sample collection, submission, and data compilation

  • Train operators on proper startup, operation, shutdown, and cleaning of equipment.

  • Interface with computer terminals, and monitoring equipment functions via computer and control rooms

Education Requirements and Qualifications

  • B.S. in relevant area (e.g. science, chemistry) is preferred; other candidates may be considered based on relevant industry experience

  • Demonstrated ability to execute and interpret laboratory assays

  • Working knowledge and familiar with laboratory instruments including balance, viscometer, wet chemistry methodologies, texture analyzer and other instrument is beneficial

  • Familiarity with conducting research trials is beneficial

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and verbal communication

  • Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse team

Experience

  • Five or more years of experience in process/pilot operations.

  • The individual must have experience setting up, operating and maintaining lab and pilot scale extruders. Experience with process development and scale up is desired.

  • The individual must have experience with a range of unit operations such as spray drying, dryers, decanters, filtration, centrifugation, extrusion, solids handling, and chemical reactions.

  • Experience in a process development or research environment is desired.

Physical Requirements

  • Applicant must have regular, prompt attendance

  • Applicant must be able to work shifts outside standard business hours as needed

  • Have the ability to climb stairs, perform some lifting (50#’s), sit and stand for long periods, work in confined spaces, working with heights, bending, kneeling, and become respirator qualified if needed

  • Candidate must be able to work in a variety of environmental conditions, such as hot and cold temperatures and a dust environment.

  • Must be able to wear a respirator.
