Overview

The Vice President of Systems Engineering will provide strategic leadership and direction for the systems engineering department, overseeing both aerospace and network engineering initiatives. This executive role requires a seasoned leader with extensive experience in aerospace and network engineering, as well as a track record of managing and aligning engineering resources to achieve organizational goals. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with senior leadership, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to drive innovation, optimize performance, and ensure the successful execution of aerospace and network engineering projects.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibities:

  • Develop and communicate a clear vision and strategic roadmap for the systems engineering department, encompassing both aerospace and network engineering domains.

  • Provide guidance and direction to engineering teams, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and priorities.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to establish goals, objectives, and performance metrics for the systems engineering department.

  • Lead and mentor a diverse team of engineers and technical professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation.

  • Provide coaching, feedback, and professional development opportunities to enhance the skills and capabilities of engineering personnel.

  • Foster cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing across aerospace and network engineering teams.

  • Oversee the execution of aerospace and network engineering projects, ensuring adherence to quality standards, timelines, and budgetary constraints.

  • Monitor project progress, identify potential risks and issues, and implement mitigation strategies as needed.

  • Collaborate with project managers and stakeholders to address challenges and drive successful project outcomes.

  • Engage with senior leadership, stakeholders, and clients to understand their needs, requirements, and expectations related to aerospace and network engineering initiatives.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, representing the systems engineering department at various forums and meetings.

  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement within the systems engineering department, leveraging emerging technologies, best practices, and industry trends.

  • Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, optimize processes, and streamline workflows across aerospace and network engineering functions.

  • Assess and mitigate risks associated with aerospace and network engineering projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and cybersecurity protocols.

  • Establish and enforce policies, procedures, and best practices to mitigate risks and maintain a secure and resilient engineering environment.

  • Build Strong Relationships: Develop and maintain strong, trusting relationships with team members.

  • Managing, Tracking, and Measuring Performance for Accountability:

  • Set SMART Goals and Clear Expectations: Establish Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) goals for team members. Define clear, measurable goals for the team, ensuring each member understands their individual responsibilities and how these goals align with and impact company objectives.

  • Performance Check-ins and Reviews: Conduct regular one-on-one meetings to assess progress, provide feedback, coaching and address any issues. Use these opportunities to set action plans for proactive improvement and development. Performance evaluation responsibility for direct reports during mid and end of fiscal year.

  • Performance Metrics: Utilize key performance indicators (KPIs) and other metrics to objectively measure and track performance.

  • Transparent Communication: Maintain open lines of communication, holding yourself and your team accountable for actions and results. Ensure that expectations and feedback are clearly communicated.

  • Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement by identifying areas for development, providing necessary support and training, and encouraging proactive growth and learning.

  • Approving Time Sheets:

  • Timely Approval: Ensure timely and accurate approval of time sheets to comply with company policies and payroll deadlines.

  • Accuracy Verification: Verify the accuracy of reported hours, addressing discrepancies promptly.

  • Compliance: Ensure that time sheet submissions comply with labor laws and company policies.

  • Feedback on Patterns: Provide feedback on attendance patterns and discuss any issues related to time management with team members.

Education/Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering).

  • 15 years’ experience leading systems engineering teams and efforts.

  • Extensive experience leading system engineering efforts, with a proven track record of leadership and achievement in executive or senior management roles.

  • Strong strategic planning and decision-making skills, with the ability to translate organizational goals into actionable plans and initiatives.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to navigate complex challenges and drive successful outcomes.

  • Previous experience working in the defense or aerospace industry is preferred, with knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and compliance standards.
