Duties & Responsibilities:(Essential Functions of Position, Major Responsibilities, Summary of Key Duties, Special Assignments, Relationships)

  • Provide direct skilled nursing care to individual student(s) as established in the IEP (this care may include riding the school bus with the student)

  • Collaborate with the IEP team to develop and implement the IEP.

  • Assess student physical and emotional health on an ongoing basis.

  • Collaborate with the school nurse to plan and develop individualized health plans and emergency plans for the provision of health services at school.

  • Plan for and provide first aid and emergency care to the student(s) throughout the school day.

  • In collaboration with the school nurse, supervise the care of the student(s) with special health care needs, including training district staff as necessary.

  • Maintain student health records.

  • Maintain regular communication with the building school nurse.

  • Maintain confidentiality with respect to student and parent right to privacy.

  • Act as a liaison between parents, school personnel, physicians and agencies in school medical matters.

  • Assume responsibility for the immediate care to student(s) who have suffered injury or emergency illness, and administer first aid in accordance with established procedures when necessary: including awareness and implementation of district and/or building disaster plans as necessary.

  • Act as an advisor within the building in matters of student health needs and maintaining sanitary and safe conditions.

  • Participate in in-service training programs.

  • Attend meetings, conferences and staffing regarding student health and health services.

  • Dispense medications and keep accurate records regarding medications.

  • Train school staff as necessary related to student(s) health condition(s) and healthcare needs.

  • Maintain and update health and emergency information data on the student(s).

  • Monthly check and restock of health supplies; e.g. multiple first aid bag/kits in buildings, AED's.

  • Make sure all cumulative health and immunization records are up to date and compliant with state law a school district policy.

  • Participate in district nurse committee work, in-service training and monthly nurse meetings.

  • Infant/Child/Adult CPR certification required.

  • Assist the District Head Nurse and building school nurse where appropriate.

  • Other duties as assigned by the administration.

  • Successful candidate must possess strong inter-personal skills with a proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students to ensure each child reaches his/her full potential.

  • Good attendance and punctuality are a must to ensure that the duties and responsibilities of the job are performed successfully.

  • Valid Iowa R.N. License from the Iowa Board of Nursing AND if holds a BSN the Endorsement [175] from Iowa Board of Educational Examiners can make individual eligible for Teacher Quality Funds.

Physical Requirements of Position:

  • Must be able to lift/push/pull 50 lbs.

  • Ability to physically lift 50lbs, bend, stoop, push/pull, walk, twist, and kneel.

    Special Qualification Desired:(Personal Qualities, Education, Skills Needed, Experience, Etc.)

  • Current certification in CPR for Health Professionals.

  • An ability and desire to work with children, parents, administrators, staff, and the community to better the total educational process of the district.

  • Experience working with children, desired.

  • Willingness to make home visits as necessary or requested.

  • Knowledge of Iowa Nurse Delegation grid.

  • Knowledge of HIPPA/FERPA laws.

  • Computer skills required to input and gather data in Infinite Campus, Ability to use Microsoft Outlook.

  • Participate in continuing education and professional meetings.
