Job Description

The External Market Investigator is responsible for overseeing investigations in Nordstrom key markets. This role will be responsible for monitoring and measuring high risk locations performance in these categories: Shrink, Loss Prevention, Physical Security, Safety and Personnel Training and Development. This role will provide on-going in-store training and development of Store Managers and Asset Protection Teams and partner with the Regional Investigators to peruse high impact cases that negatively affect shrink and Nordstrom’s ability to deliver on their commitments of Fashion Authority, Service and Experience and Brand to our customers. The role of a Market Investigator can provide you with the experience of building knowledge of criminal prosecution practices and expectations, as well as investigations skills in external and internal investigations (identification, investigation and resolution), skills using mobile, stationary and physical surveillance, and intelligence-led tactics to aid in shrink reduction, including Nordstrom video surveillance system.

A day in the life…

  • Ensure the protection of Nordstrom team members, physical assets and buildings and increase profitability by resolving theft and reducing shrink in key market area

  • Support a theft and shortage prevention and resolution culture to ensure product is in stock and available for our customers

  • Conduct and support investigations into individuals associated with ORC groups and activities. This includes high-level field & fence investigations, case development and resolution.

  • Lead and close complex market or regional theft cases including ORC, fraud, brand and reputational issues

  • Develop and investigate major organized external and internal cases which may result in a significant loss to Nordstrom

  • Use methods of prevention, detection, investigation, resolution, and recovery

  • Conduct static and mobile surveillance.

  • Lead cases that require specialized investigative tactics and all internal investigations that involve store management and AP cases

  • Responsible for working with Store Management and field Asset Protection to identify ORC and external theft opportunities, recommend resolutions, and create action plans to eliminate those opportunities within a market using reporting tools. e.g., Store Incident Reports, ORC & Safety reporting, BOLOs from market ORC associations

  • Build partnerships with industry organizations and benchmark the competition for trends and initiatives that are impacting the industry

  • Support and consult business partners on external investigations and store-level internal investigations, as needed

  • Provide hands on training of investigative tactics and coach and train field and store leaders on investigative interview tactics

  • Develop positive relationship with law enforcement agencies at local, state, and federal levels, as well as other retail loss prevention ORC organizations to identify, investigate and prosecute offenders

  • Partner with law enforcement, HQ, field and store Asset Protection teams to aggregate applicable investigations charges

  • Ensure all prosecution/referral of local theft and fraud investigations are completed to the highest possible level and when necessary, represent Nordstrom in court and legal proceedings

  • Identify all aspects of emerging theft opportunities, trends and cases within your market using reporting, trend analysis, and internal and external partners to initiate and investigate theft activity

FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Self-Motivated, Strong Bias for Action, ability to multitask and organize time and resources for effective workload management.

  • Work independently with minimal supervision prioritizing workload off of company tenants and impact to business.

  • Ability to handle complex investigations involving sensitive and confidential information with discretion and trust.

  • Represent Nordstrom at ORC conferences and meetings and testify in court.

  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills

You’ve got this if…

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred or demonstrated experience required

  • 3+ years Loss Prevention Experience or Equivalent, Law Enforcement or Military Experience

  • Meet any state or local licensure and/or other legal requirements related to the position

  • Experience and knowledge with internal and external theft investigations tactics and apprehending subjects

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Well versed in use of Social Media platforms, internet-based retailers/marketplaces

  • Proven execution skills and ability to drive change

  • Operate in an ambiguous and rapidly changing work environment

  • Quickly adapt to changing priorities and tasks

  • Work in high intensity situations with composure and ease

  • Solution-based mindset with desire to uncover business gaps and solve problems

Pay Range Details

California: $71,000.00 - $114,000.00 Annually
