Position summary:
As our Director of Gas Supply Services, you will lead all aspects of the gas supply portfolio for Black Hills Energy, including oversight of load forecasting and planning, physical and financial portfolio management, gas supply purchases, hedge strategy and execution, and negotiation of pipeline services. You will be an expert project leader and relationship builder who can develop, improve, and drive our projects and initiatives forward. We'll also look to you to ensure our processes and projects remain in compliance with company policy, pipeline requirements, and state and federal regulations.
Pay Range:$152,100 - $250,950 (This posting includes the full pay range for this position. Pay is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity.)

Essential Functions:
• Responsible for developing gas supply strategy and leading the gas supply functions for all Black Hills Energy gas utility and natural gas-fired electric generation activity, including leading a team of approximately 15 employees that are located in 3 regional offices. Must be a critical thinker with ability to lead and adapt to changing circumstances, usually quickly and in pressure situations.
• Work with Senior Managers and forecasting team to develop, implement and execute daily, monthly, and annual gas supply plans and communicate plans (and results) to stakeholders, which includes formal filings with state commissions and in-person plan presentations.
• Oversee activity for portfolio planning, forecasting, analysis, natural gas pipeline nominations, gas purchases and sales, capacity release, curtailment, contracting, LNG dispatch, and other functions as required.
• Execute financial and physical gas hedge strategies, monitor compliance with portfolio plans and communicate results on an on-going basis. Provide back-up support for daily transactional activity if business needs require. This will require knowledge and experience with Enterprise Transaction Risk Management systems and learning Endur (Ion/OpenLink), and active knowledge of regional gas supply activity.
• Work with internal and external stakeholders to develop peak day and emergency backup supply plans, including curtailment plans, and be prepared to implement should the business need arise.
• Draft and present testimony, as necessary, in support of regulated gas supply plans and state regulatory activity, as well as participate in and address interstate pipeline rate activity.
• Provide ongoing support to the Leadership Team, by performing in various special projects as assigned and aligned with our corporate strategic plan and focus, which includes active participation in meetings and discussions across the enterprise related to growth, strategy and operations. This may include planning and integration of newly acquired business units or integration activities related to existing businesses or functions.
• Negotiate contracted services on numerous interstate and intrastate gas pipelines, and gas supply purchases (as needed) including Requests for Proposals and Right of First Refusal and contract execution. Work with Contracts team to ensure compliance with company procedures and policy.
• This role is responsible for financial management duties including: revenue generation of $5-$7 million annually through new and existing state-approved programs; managing over $500 million annually in purchase costs and pipeline charges; and developing and managing a department budget to include travel, training, and outside services expenses.
• Develop short, medium, and long-term gas supply plans designed to ensure safe, reliable, and prudent gas supply services for our utility customers.
Additional Responsibilities:
• Adhere to and ensure compliance with state regulatory requirements and natural gas rules, company policies, utility and pipeline tariffs, and federal regulations that govern gas supply activity (including capacity release and asset management agreements), and ensure team is properly trained.
• Collaborate with state leaders, Finance, Legal, Regulatory, Growth and Engineering teams on special projects to enhance reliability and support growth. This may include leading or sponsoring project activities or ensuring data accuracy for state and federal filings.
• Develop and maintain strong company and industry contacts, which may include attending seminars and events in the energy industry.
What Is Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Mathematics, Finance or other business-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum of ten years of experience in natural gas, utility, or related energy experience, focused on the areas of transportation logistics, valuation methods and developing business strategies is required.
• Capable of mentoring, developing, and inspiring team members.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to determine the risks and opportunities associated with decisions and strategies.
• Strong ability to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders, staff, customers, and regulatory bodies.
• Ability to effectively communicate with various levels of leadership, via written and verbal communication measures.
• Possess comprehensive commercial and operational expertise in natural gas, natural gas-fired generation, renewable natural gas (RNG), and liquefied natural gas (LNG), facilitating growth and successful project execution.
• Knowledge of electric and gas utilities and state and federal regulatory principles related to the natural gas market.
• Knowledge of the upstream, midstream, and downstream regulated and non-regulated natural gas market.
• Ability to communicate complex concepts and ideas into simple descriptions that are understandable by non-experts.
• Understand utility planning and operating methods, and have strong financial acumen.
What Is Desired:
• Areas of expertise should include federal and state regulated environments; natural gas or equivalent commodity experience including upstream, midstream, and downstream (retail or wholesale) marketing. Proven track record of transactional execution, in regulated and non-regulated environments.
