LIBRARY TECHNICIAN CATALOGER

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

As a member of the Technical Services department, the Library Technician reports to the Cataloging and Metadata Manager. Their role involves cataloging both print and electronic materials in accordance with established bibliographic cataloging codes, rules, and selected metadata schemas. The cataloger is responsible for creating, editing, and improving bibliographic and holdings records in the Library Services Platform (LPS), Alma, to ensure the accurate representation and discoverability of the library's collections. The position requires independent judgment based on extensive knowledge of library policies and procedures, as well as planning, assigning, and directing work. Special focus is placed on performing copy cataloging of more challenging items, troubleshooting complex copy cataloging problems, and ensuring metadata quality control. This position may also supervise one or more student assistants and assist in training other staff in the department.

This is a regular, full-time, normal business hours position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cataloging and Metadata (60%)

  • Receives and processes print books and other physical materials, ensuring timely cataloging of new materials.

  • Works with librarians and staff to perform complex copy cataloging of target collections, such as non-book formats, online resources, special collections, gift collections, or architecture resources.

  • Catalogs and upgrades minimal-level LC and OCLC member copies for new and retrospective titles; Revises and adds classification numbers, names, and subject headings as needed.

  • Assists in original cataloging for titles with no OCLC records but with established sources.

  • Searches for usable cataloging copy in other bibliographic databases (e.g., Library of Congress, via Z39.50, etc.).

  • Assists in special projects to support departmental goals and library-wide initiatives.

  • Problem identification and resolution (20%)

  • Identifies discrepancies in copy cataloging and metadata, including description, classification, and subject assignment.

  • Identifies and initiates resolution of other problems, including researching authority files, the online catalog, and other sources to identify and establish a correct form of name, series, or subject.

  • Supervisory responsibilities (10%)

  • Assists unit head in training student assistants and coordinating the student assistants' workflow.

  • Assists in the training and supervision of staff.

  • Other activities (10%)

  • Participates in assigned database maintenance and quality control activities

  • Assists in special projects (such as moving or transporting collection locations, adding specialized subjects and other pertinent information to collections of online journals)

  • Performs additional tasks as assigned based on departmental needs.

  • Communications, Relationships, and Service (ongoing)

  • Maintain helpful and supportive customer service behavior with all library patrons, whether they are internal or external.

  • Collaborate with other catalogers, metadata specialists, and library staff to ensure the efficient and effective processing of library materials.

  • Participate in ongoing cataloging training and professional development opportunities to stay current with evolving cataloging standards and best practices.

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of cataloging workflows, documentation, and procedures.

  • When possible, participate in committees and teams within and outside the Libraries to provide services to the Libraries, University, and the Community.

This individual may supervise student assistants.

  • LEVEL OF CONTACTS

The individual works with all levels of library faculty and staff as well as student employees. In all contacts, the incumbent is expected to be professional and courteous.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Skills, Training, etc.)

  • High School graduate

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience OR 3 years of college OR a combination of both. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.

  • Basic data entry and/or word processing skills.

  • Analytic and critical thinking skills.

  • Aptitude for accuracy and detail.

  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others.

  • Ability to work independently in a team environment.

  • Good oral and written English language communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Excellent knowledge of basic standards for bibliographic description.

  • Good working knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards, such as RDA, MARC, and Library of Congress, preferred

  • Knowledge of authority control practices.

  • Prior experience in copy cataloging preferred.

  • Working knowledge of one (1) foreign language, preferred

ON-THE-JOB-TECHNICAL SKILLS

The position will develop proficiency in the following:

  • Thorough knowledge of OCLC software and OCLC bibliographic formats and standards.

  • Thorough knowledge of Ex Libris Alma.

  • Through knowledge in handling authority control procedures involved in the use and maintenance of the library's database.

  • Thorough knowledge of Library of Congress classification and subject headings, RDA, and MARC21 format.

  • Thorough knowledge of local cataloging standards and practices.

  • Thorough knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.

  • Good knowledge of MS Word and other MS Office products, as necessary.

  • Proficiency in using e-mail.
