The Recreational Sports program provides participants with an opportunity to get involved with the campus community through physical activities, while providing diverse, competitive sports opportunities for students across a broad range of skill levels and experiences. The Recreational Sports program offers around 35 Club Sports who compete collegiately in their respective leagues across the country.

POSITION TITLE: Club Sports Athletic Trainer

REPORTS TO:

● Department of Wellness & Recreation: Director and Assistant Director, Recreational Sports

● Medical Supervision: Assigned U Health medical physician

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

● Applied Knowledge: Athletic trainers must have knowledge of a large range of medical problems. Assessment, evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be required.

● Decision-Making Skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.

● Attention to Detail: Athletic trainers should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.

● Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situations when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff and families.

● Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Onsite care and management of injuries and illnesses including prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation.

● Assess risk of injury; perform ergonomic evaluation and coaching, self-care implementation and overall wellness promotion.

● Electronic documentation of all patient encounters.

● Coordinate and implement injury prevention programs and customized preventative strategies and programs to each patient.

● Minimize risk of injury through awareness, education and prevention strategies.

● Provide accommodation recommendations, related to sport, for student athletes with restrictions or limitations.

● Communicate with Recreational Sports staff and physicians regarding the injury status of athletes.

● Carry out medical care for assigned student-athletes per the sports medicine standard operating procedures.

● Responsible for administrative and other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

● Work clinic hours during the selected workday evenings and weekend home contests when required or needed.

NUMBER/DESCRIPTION OF PATIENTS (STUDENT ATHLETES) RESPONSIBLE FOR:

The Athletic Training staff’s primary responsibility will be to provide treatment to nearly 1,300 Club Sport participants.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Services are provided for all away competitions within Miami-Dade County. This typically includes sports such as ice hockey, rugby, and soccer home games.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is medium demand. Lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. Medium strength is required to position patients for examination. May assist patients as needed, helping them on and off the exam table. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Preceptorship opportunities may be available in collaboration with the undergraduate Athletic Training program.

Minimum qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training or related field experience in physical therapy. Required to have NATA-BOC Certification for Florida Licensure as an Athletic Trainer, possess state athletic training licensure. NPI Number Required.

OTHER CREDENTIAL preferred

CSCS, PES, ATR, GRASTON, JOINT, MOB, ECT

Physical Therapist must be eligible for Florida Licensure

Bachelor degree required. Must be BOC Certified. Must be eligible for Florida Licensure as an Athletic Trainer under the written protocol and supervised by University of Miam’s Physician as directed by the State of Florida Athletic Trainers Act.
