Waste Connections Plant Operator in Conklin, Alberta

R360 Canada, an affiliate of Waste Connections, offers a variety of services to clients in the energy, environmental and industrial sectors. These services are delivered via our network of facilities, along with our specialized equipment and assets. We are equipped to process, recover, recycle and dispose of waste and other materials safely and cost-effectively for our customers.

Job Purpose

This position is responsible for understanding and complying with all company policies and procedures of the site. As a Plant Operator, you are responsible for your own safety and that of fellow workers. Your key areas of focus include: meeting health and safety standards, OH&S regulations, developing operational excellence, providing top customer service to external clients, and providing safety leadership to others.

This is a full-time position working 14 days on 14 days off 12-hour schedule. Candidates will be provided with camp accommodations right on site as well as a subsistence for living expenses paid monthly, however must provide their own transportation to and from work.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Health and Safety

  • Lead by example and provide safety leadership with all tasks.

  • Work with facility staff to ensure all R360 Canada Environmental H&S standards, policies & procedures are adhered to by truck drivers, contractors, visitors and support any safety audits.

  • Report all incidents to your Supervisor or Manager.

  • Attend and participate in all safety meetings.

  • Ensure open flow of communication with all workers.

  • Participate in regular competency checks to ensure operator competency of task and that operating procedures accurately detail the steps required to complete each task.

  • Encourage employees to take responsibility for their own safety and that of their fellow workers.

  • Maintain high housekeeping standards throughout the worksite and ensure that the worksites are kept free of hazards that could cause slips, trips or falls.

  • Make appropriate suggestions for improvement of health and safety within the company.

  • Conduct regular worksite & equipment inspections in accordance with company policy.

  • Right to know of the hazards of the workplace, right to participate in the elimination or control of those hazards and the right to refuse unsafe work or working conditions.

  • Ensure all required training certifications are valid and properly communicated to supervisor or manager if any are nearing expiration to get re-certified.

  • Ensure necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) is being used properly, and taken care of according to manufactures instructions.

  • All safety sensitive positions are required to maintain any facial hair to always pass a proper seal for air-purifying respirators (APR) or full-face mask while on shift. Respirators shall not be worn when facial hair comes between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face or that interferes with valve function. Facial hair is allowed if it does not protrude under the respirator seal, or extend far enough to interfere with the device's valve function. Short mustaches, sideburns, and small goatees that are neatly trimmed so that no hair compromises the seal of the respirator usually do not present a hazard.

  • Understand the role and responsibilities in an emergency event.

Environment and Regulatory Compliance

  • Be familiar with facility approval and ensure operations are adhering to these regulations.

  • Ensure accurate reporting internally.

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure the activities of the facility are aligned with the company mission, vision, values, operating policies and strategy.

  • Provide coaching with new workers & co-workers in safe working practices.

  • Provide technical and operations support for all staff.

  • Ensure all worksite equipment and components are maintained in good operating condition.

  • Be familiar with and understand limitations of all facility equipment, tools, chemicals used and product waste streams.

  • Situational awareness and ability to adapt to changes as they happen, ability to think quickly.

Customer Service

  • Ensure the business and its services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image.

  • Instill a passion for customer service and the “customer experience”.

  • Assist the business development team with new ideas for growth, recommend continuous improvement projects to support business unit operations and development.

  • Facilitate new business development processes and work with Area Managers to provide necessary business case for change and/or improvement.

Qualifications/Competencies

  • Experience and Knowledge of oilfield and facility equipment considered an asset.

  • Valid H2S Alive and First Aid/CPR certifications prior to starting work. All other training will be provided as part of the onboarding.

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and/or reliable methods of transportation to get to & from the site.

  • Computer skills with ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other operational software applications, including the use of electronic mobile devices would be considered an asset.

  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting attributes.

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, ability to change priorities and make ongoing decisions to meet expectations.

  • Takes initiative and identifies opportunities for efficiencies.

  • Team focus with the ability to build strong collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Physically capable to perform duties that include moderate to heavy lifting

  • Highly self-motivated team player with keen attention to detail.
