Hargrove & Associates, Inc. seeks a Mechanical/Piping Technical Specialist II in Concord, CA.

Duties: Generally responsible for supervision and technical direction over a team of designers when functioning as a lead designer. As lead designer, responsibilities will include total delivery of the mechanical and piping deliverables and services on time, within performance budget and meeting quality expectations. Duties may include performing advanced design work serving as a technical specialist for a complex design assignment. This level requires extensive progressive experience in mechanical and piping design and involves utilization of project controls for cost, schedule and quality of projects. This work will be performed under minimal supervision.

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Familiarity with and utilizing department design and drafting standards.

  • Recognizing and communicating project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.

  • Recognizing and communicating scope and design changes promptly.

  • On-site assistance during startup.

  • Providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel in the department.

  • Coordinating work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.

  • Producing mechanical and piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval.

  • Complete understanding of the skills and experience required to perform design functions.

  • Proactively lead and coordinate the efforts of a design staff to achieve scope, schedule and budget objectives.

  • Mentoring subordinates.

  • -Participating in squad checks to insure coordination between the design disciplines.

  • -Checking calculations made by other designers to ensure accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria and conformance to good engineering practice.

  • Determining construction quantities and provide construction cost estimates.

  • Delegating work to designers in proportion to their technical skills and experience, then following up for support to ensure efficient progress and quality.

  • Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines in proportion to their technical skills and experience, then following up for support to ensure efficient progress and quality.

  • Participating in the planning of training programs, continuous education opportunities and professional development of staff.

Requires an Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Engineering Management or Computer Aided Drafting plus 14.5 years of industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design required.

  • Requires 14.5 years of experience with application of Piping materials & Interpretations of P&IDs including (a) Selection of materials based on design conditions, (b) Selection, including economics of best use. and (c) Provide input regarding line sizing, branch sequence, and instrument requirements.

  • Requires 14.5 years of experience with the design of moderately complex process and utility piping systems for oil and gas units.

  • Requires 14.5 years of experience with all best practices regarding layout and design of piping systems including (a) Experienced navigation of API and ANSI Codes and Standards including (i) ANSI B31.3, B31.3, (ii) API 686, API 650, (iii) NFPA 25; (b) Equipment layout including (i) Pipe Rack Spacing/Utilization and

  • (ii) Equipment arrangements including Constructability.

  • Requires 14.5 years of experience with the application of stress analysis into piping design including (a) Understanding of Caesar II analysis software, (b) Ability to size and space pipe support components and (c) Provide for economy in design.

  • Requires 14.5 years of experience in managing and reporting piping project process including (a) Estimating, (b) Schedule and (c) Budget.

  • Requires 12 years of experience with leading small multidiscipline design teams from concept to completion including (a) Strong knowledge of best practices for (i) Civil, (ii) Structural, (iii)Mechanical Equipment, (iv) Process and (v) Instrumentation and Controls.

  • Requires 10 years of experience with aptitude and ability using 3D software, including Point Cloud software, and drawing extraction software.

  • Requires 10 years of experience with the design of moderately complex process and utility piping systems for chemical units.

  • Requires 5 years of experience with the design of moderately complex process and utility piping systems for biotech units.
