About the job:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for serving as a lead in departmental services/activities to departmental customers (internal & external). This position is accountable for providing direction and analysis including recommendations when appropriate for all assigned requests/projects. The Senior Accountant is responsible for serving as a mentor/resource for fellow accountants within the Finance Department as well as lead project/initiatives within the department. The Senior Accountant is expected to demonstrate problem solving skills as related to healthcare financial operations and possess a thorough understanding of external, regulatory, payor and other forces impacting health care financial operations including GAAP, IRS regulations, etc.

What you'll do:

  • Maintains open communication with Mount Carmel Health System and Trinity Health and system support resources to ensure accurate and efficient use of the organization's financial systems.

  • Provides Financial Analytics including: Researches and interprets accounting implications for various business relationships and transactions. Develops operational processes to appropriately record financial transactions in accordance with GAAP.

  • Performs various analyses, developing correlations between actual and budget as related to various activity measures, cost/revenue and productivity indicators.

  • Provides routine reports as needed and prepares complex report writing and coding in applicable systems.

  • Supports the Finance Management team with reporting activities, often functioning as the lead.

  • Provides proactive analysis aimed at improving financial performance throughout the hospital system by anticipating future trends, threats, and opportunities affecting financial results of the organization.

  • Assists with Departmental Development and Maintenance activities including:

  • Leads departmental efforts to create and organize policy and procedure documentation.

  • Assists in the streamlining of all routine activities, maximizing the department’s availability to provide critical information and analysis.

  • Identifies and initiates process and service improvements with the support of management.

  • Leads and facilitates projects utilizing various project management tools and methodologies.

  • Participates in various consulting projects by providing data, explaining data elements, and interfacing with external customers.

  • Performs all assigned month-end closing and annual audit responsibilities with a high level of accuracy and minimal supervision in accordance with the established department close process schedule including:

  • Meets all deadlines in a timely and proficient manner.

  • Performs duties to ensure general ledger integrity including:

  • Performs data/account reconciliations to verify accuracy and functionality and develops processes to rectify any deficiencies.

  • Validates accuracy of data from general ledger source systems and initiates process to maintain or correct data.

  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with leaders from Mount Carmel Health System, Trinity Health and related entities and exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality when required.

  • Participates in and fosters a performance improvement approach that includes both intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities.

  • Responsible for compliance with Organizational Integrity through raising questions and promptly reporting actual or potential wrongdoing.

  • All other duties as assigned.

What we're looking for :

  • Education: Bachelor degree in Accounting, Finance or related field is required or equivalent combination of related education and experience in lieu of a degree (minimum 8 years related work experience). MBA/MHA or CPA preferred.

  • Licensure / Certification: CPA preferred

  • Experience: Three to four years of progressively challenging experience in finance setting (Health Care setting preferred) with experience in one or more of the following areas: Accounting, Finance or related field. Health plan experience, preferably in MA plan environment but not required.

  • Effective Communication Skills

  • Ability to perform detailed variance review and financial analysis.

  • Demonstrates the ability to understand and interpret complex issues and processes and to escalate issues to appropriate resources.

  • Demonstrates strong project management skills with proven success at managing large- scale projects through to completion with limited supervision in required, tightened timeframes while maintaining a strategic perspective.

  • Demonstrates the ability to understand and interpret complex accounting issues and processes and to recommend actions to ensure integrity of financial systems and compliance with GAAP.
