Actalent Fully Remote Distribution Engineer in Columbus, Ohio

Description:

Our client is a Civil Consulting Engineering firm with seven offices in Michigan and additional offices throughout the Midwest. Maybe 19 offices total.

In terms of employee size they currently employee a little over 700 people.

Work directly connected to the the Utility industry, Construction Services, Site development, Survey, Storm Water, Transportation, Waste Water, etc...

This opportunity would be directly connected to their Utility Energy Division.

This department recently won a very large contract with Consumers Energy to help support distribution and reliability work. As a result of this win they are building a team to support that work. The department grew 30% last year and expecting a 40% growth minimum this year. This department is still in its infancy stages which allows someone to be in a key position to grow with the business. Eventually individuals who able to perform at a high level will have a chance to be a lead directly connected to clients point of contact and lead work when awarded. The ICE division as a whole has service agreements in place with five to seven major utility companies throughout the mid-west. Individuals could also be tied to other utility work out of state to as an opportunity to grow their knowledge of the industry. They also promotes their engineering staff to continue their growth by helping individuals prepare for their FE exam and eventually work towards their PE license.

Responsibilities:

Individual will be responsible for independently develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems for electric utility customers.(The bulk of the work will be overhead.)

Individual will review work provided by client (Consumers Energy) and assess requirements of the scopes;

In state of Michigan employees may be asked to do some field work but if they absolutely do not want to do field work they will work with candidate to come up with a solution

Out of state candidates will be provided field pictures and measurements to use for their designs. Field info will also include info related to possible easements that need to be crossed, roads that need to be crossed, trees that would interfere which would then translate into permits being obtained to complete the final package.

There will be frequent communication with clients and in some situations in person for meetings (Michigan) and e-mail, teams, phone.

Perform engineering calculations such as: structural analysis using software such as poleforman or PLA/Planning Load Analysis or similar software

Software will help make decisions on wood pole loading, guying calculations, specifying conductor sags, tensions for recommended spans, and calculation of voltage drop and flicker.

Eventually turn in final electrical design package which will include - Field pictures, measurements, design work, Analysis, BOM/Build Of Materials, and permits which are then used by the client/Consumers Energy as their field construction packages.

Provide engineering support during construction, including post-construction reviews to ensure all applicable engineering and construction standards have been met.

Gain experience in coordinating conflicting utilities and other field engineering design requirements, assessing and developing large design packages for complex cable/conduit projects in dense urban environments, work permit development, easements, and ROW applications

Work Environment

100% remote is an option in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and West Pennsylvania. Candidates in Michigan could go into the office if they wanted, they could also do field work if they are in Michigan and wanted to, and work from home if that is what works for them.

INDIVIDUALS OUT OF STATE will be asked to spend a week or two when starting in Michigan to meet team and get trained. All expenses will be covered

Qualifications:

Must have Design Experience - Open Utilities is the preferred but they are open to AutoCAD, Bentley, Microstation or other packages used to support this work

Must have 6 months plus of power distribution engineering or design experience or make ready or joint use experience

Must have 6 months plus doing design packages or Bill of Materials or BOM or electrical packages or electrical construction packages

Relevant experience is either working directly with an electric utility Consumers Energy/Michigan, or DTE/Michigan, AEP/Ohio, Direct Energy/Ohio, or Atlantic Energy/Illinois, Great American Power/Illinois, Horizon Power and Light/Illinois or Duke Energy/Indiana, or NIPSCO/Indiana or an electric utility consulting firm Sigma Technologies, Pike, Orbital, Metro Engineering Solutions, Burns and Mac, or other similar companies that support utility work performing electric distribution design or engineering.

Experience with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and distribution construction & design standards are required

Experience doing QA/Quality Assurance or QC/Quality Control

Experience helping with training of new employees

Experience helping write process standards
