Actalent Weld Production Engineer in Columbus, Indiana

Job Title: Weld Production EngineerJob Description

TMH is the largest Forklift manufacturer in the world. In the Columbus facility, they manufacture custom forklifts for their customers, ranging from 1 ton to 8 tons of weight capacity. This is an OEM plant where the entire assembly process of the forklift is completed. On average, TMH manufactures 100 forklifts per day. In January 2024, an additional 250,000 square foot facility will begin construction, with production starting in Q3 of 2025. Additional products will be announced and manufactured in Columbus in the coming months. The new products will be manufactured in the existing plant, while some current products will move to the new plant. The Production Engineering group is responsible for setting up and moving all manufacturing processes for both the new and existing plants. The manufacturing facility includes processes for sheet metal cutting and fabrication, steel saw cutting, CNC machining, press brake and hydraulic press forming, manual and robotic MIG welding, resistance welding, powder coating, painting, assembly, and inspection. Additionally, it includes processes specific to our product such as hydraulic cylinder and hose manufacturing. The production engineer position is split into four primary responsibilities: Capital Projects (35-40%), Troubleshooting (10%), Downtime/Quality Investigations (20-30%), and Tooling Design/Design for Manufacturing (10%). Within capital projects, the focus is on identifying areas to reduce headcount and further automate. For troubleshooting, the engineer will support if maintenance cannot correct an issue. For tooling design, they will create tooling welding from prints provided by the new product development team. Candidates hired for this role will split their time between project management responsibilities and hands-on troubleshooting of equipment. From a project standpoint, they will be responsible for specific projects assigned to them, which may involve working with vendors/suppliers, managing new launch activity, performing machine builds/installation, and downtime reduction. When issues arise that neither Maintenance nor Quality teams can support, the Production Engineering group will assist in troubleshooting or repairing equipment/processes. When supporting their projects, candidates will do design for manufacturing work, including tooling, fixtures, and machines using CATIA.
