Overview

HVAC Subject Matter Expert (SME) - Data Center Operations

Position Overview: As an HVAC Subject Matter Expert (SME) specializing in Data Center Operations, you will play a critical role in ensuring the optimal performance, reliability, and efficiency of HVAC systems within our data center facilities. Leveraging your expertise in HVAC design, maintenance, and optimization, you will provide technical guidance and support to ensure uninterrupted operation of critical cooling infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. HVAC System Management:

· Lead and oversee the design, installation, and maintenance of HVAC systems within data center facilities, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.

· Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs for HVAC equipment, including chillers, cooling towers, CRAC units, and air handling units, to maximize system reliability and efficiency.

· Monitor HVAC system performance through data analysis and predictive maintenance techniques, identifying opportunities for optimization and energy savings.

  1. Technical Guidance:

· Serve as the primary technical authority on HVAC systems within data center environments, providing expert guidance on system design, operation, and troubleshooting.

· Conduct technical reviews and evaluations of HVAC equipment and configurations to identify opportunities for improvement and optimization, balancing energy efficiency with cooling capacity requirements.

· Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data center HVAC design and operation to drive innovation and operational excellence.

  1. Compliance and Safety:

· Ensure compliance with HVAC codes, regulations, and standards governing data center facilities, including ASHRAE guidelines, to maintain a safe and efficient operating environment.

· Conduct regular inspections and audits of HVAC systems to assess compliance with regulatory requirements and identify potential safety hazards or operational inefficiencies.

· Develop and implement safety protocols, procedures, and training initiatives to mitigate risks associated with HVAC operation and maintenance activities.

  1. Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:

· Investigate HVAC-related issues within data center environments, diagnose problems, and propose effective solutions to address technical challenges while minimizing downtime.

· Conduct root cause analysis of HVAC failures and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence, leveraging advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.

· Provide technical support during emergency situations, such as temperature excursions or equipment malfunctions, to maintain optimal operating conditions and prevent impact on critical IT infrastructure.

  1. Documentation and Reporting:

· Maintain accurate records of HVAC equipment, maintenance activities, and performance metrics within data center facilities.

· Prepare comprehensive reports, technical documentation, and presentations for internal stakeholders and regulatory authorities, demonstrating compliance and system performance.

· Analyze data and performance metrics specific to HVAC systems to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and optimize operational efficiency through data-driven decision-making.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (Master's degree preferred).

· Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification is highly desirable.

· Extensive experience (minimum 7 years) in HVAC design, maintenance, and optimization, with a focus on data center facilities.

· In-depth knowledge of HVAC codes, regulations, and standards applicable to data center operations, including ASHRAE guidelines.

· Proven track record of successfully managing HVAC systems within data center environments, with a strong emphasis on reliability and energy efficiency.

· Strong technical proficiency in HVAC system design, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance, particularly within mission-critical facilities.

· Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, including non-technical stakeholders.

· Exceptional problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

· Proficiency in HVAC design software, energy modeling tools, and data analysis techniques, with a keen understanding of data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools and software.
