Salary/Pay Range : $20/hour for 10 hours a week. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications.

Summary

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs is hiring a Paraprofessional Interim Collections Manager for their Seyhan Dwelis Archaeological Repository housed in the Department of Anthropology. The collections manager is responsible for maintaining the overall organization, maintenance, operations and function of the repository. Duties include processing, cataloging and analyzing artifacts, preparing artifacts and records for permanent curation in accordance with state and federal laws, and assisting with writing portions of archaeological reports and coordinating with department archaeologists on projects and curation needs. In addition, the repository is a federal and state approved repository so additional duties include working with federal and state entities on accessing, accepting, processing and maintaining incoming collections according to federal or state laws.

Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain records and databases related to archives and collections

  • Work with department archaeologists to coordinate archaeological projects and collections management

  • With ad hoc input from Anthropology faculty on an as-needed basis, work with State Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, Office of Sponsored Programs and CRM specialists to coordinate, draft and execute curation agreements, transfer of collections and assess fees

  • Supervise student workers and interns

  • Facilitate access to collections as requested by researchers, depositors, or other qualified requestors

  • Order supplies as needed and maintain curation budget under the guidance of the Department of Anthropology Chair and department Finance Professional.

  • Stay current with repository and archive cataloging and registration methods, techniques, and management information systems.

  • Maintain familiarity with laws pertaining to museum collection, cultural resource management, repatriation issues; copyright laws; insurance laws; and campus fine arts insurance practices.

  • Maintain familiarity with basic preventative conservation concepts, procedures, and terms.

  • Document provenience and identification information for collection's objects according to repository and museum best practices and create a collection catalog

  • Photograph collection objects for catalog

  • Label collection objects according to best practice

  • Work with campus PastPerfect administrators to coordinate database maintenance and backups

  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with colleagues, students, administration, outside professionals, volunteers, and interns and the ability to effectively represent the University.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • BA in archaeology and/or museum studies.

  • Experience with archaeological collections and relational databases.

  • Working knowledge of current museum/repository/archival registration practices.

  • At least one year of archaeological repository, museum registration or related experience.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work efficiently and multitask in a fast-paced environment.

  • Detail-oriented, self-starter capable of working in a team.

  • Working knowledge and experience with PastPerfect museum collections management software.
