Summary

The Philosophy Department, which offers the Philosophy major and minor, the Religious Studies minor, the Asian Studies minor, the Classics minor, and the Pre-Law minor, is one of the original programs at UCCS. We teach inclusively from a wide variety of philosophical and religious traditions. The Department's primary duties are teaching introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses that suit our varied areas of expertise and our students' needs, as well as courses that service the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences and the entire University. Several of our courses count toward the UCCS Compass Curriculum, which all students at the University are required to complete. The Department is known across the University for its excellent teaching, and several Department faculty have won major teaching awards. All Departmental faculty have PhDs; research is a significant component of the workload for tenure-track faculty. Many of our full-time teaching faculty (non-tenure-track) are research-active as well. We have a vibrant departmental culture, and research is consistently discussed, encouraged, and supported by and for all. All of our faculty are active in governance at the Department, College, University, and CU-system levels, resulting in our Department having a significant voice in College and University matters of shared governance. Both tenure-track and teaching faculty are consistently active in the disciplines' professional organizations as well, making UCCS Philosophy well-known regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

We invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Philosophy of Technology, whose research explores the philosophical implications, and the ethics and politics, of the technologies that are rapidly and significantly reshaping our understanding of ourselves and our world. The additional area of Continental Thought, broadly understood, that we seek will ensure that this research and teaching on emergent technologies will be situated within a philosophical history, methodology, and tradition that grapples with the "human/machine" dynamic in humanistic ways.

The successful applicant must demonstrate the potential for an active research program. We expect this potential to be realized in publishing articles in well-respected, peer-reviewed journals, in edited monographs, and in singly authored or co-authored books. In addition, we expect ongoing engagement in national and international professional societies and associations as speakers, commentators, or session chairs.

The successful applicant can expect an annual 3/2 teaching load, with a combination of lower- and upper-level undergraduate courses, including already existing courses such as Philosophy and AI, Cyborgs and Monsters, and Phenomenology. Some in-person teaching will be required. We also expect the new faculty member to develop new courses in consultation with the Department Chair. Any demonstrable teaching experience with diverse groups is appreciated, and we welcome evidence of, or a willingness to develop, diverse pedagogical methods.

In addition to its reputation for teaching, research, and active participation in campus-wide shared governance, the Department is known for its service in the community. Therefore, we are looking for a vibrant, collegial faculty member who can maintain and elevate the level of philosophical discourse at UCCS and across the Pikes Peak region.

Since external funding for projects exploring emergent technologies is particularly abundant at the current time, we also hope for a colleague who will be active in applying for and securing grants to support research and teaching.
