About the Position:

The Department is seeking one temporary fisheries technician to assist with the Lake Pend Oreille Fishery Recovery Program. The primary focus of this position is to collect biological data on various fish species of conservation and management concern captured during gillnet suppression efforts targeting Lake Trout. Species typically caught include Lake Trout, Bull Trout, Gerrard-strain Rainbow Trout, Westslope Cutthroat Trout, Walleye, and Northern Pike.

Biological data collection includes measurements, trait identification, aging structures, genetic samples, and implanting various tags (e.g., PIT, T-bar anchor, acoustic transmitters). Over half of the time will be spent on a commercial gillnetting boat, with additional days in the office preparing gear, entering data, processing samples, and conducting analyses. Technicians will have opportunities to build or enhance skills within the programs scope of work, such as aging structures, conducting analyses, and writing R scripts.

General Information:

Incumbents must be able to work a variable schedule under adverse weather conditions and lift and carry/pack up to 50 lbs. This is a full-time (40 hours/week) non-benefited position. The position may require work outside of a typical 9-5 schedule, including weekends and some holidays. Housing may be available but is not guaranteed. The position runs from the first week of September 2024 to May 2025 (with one month of mandatory separation during that period).

Responsibilities:

Incumbents will work as part of a research team, including commercial gillnetting crews and other IDFG biologists and technicians. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Collecting biological data from fish captured via gillnets

- Data entry and QA/QC

- Age and growth preparation and analyses

This is a highly collaborative research project, and incumbents may be given opportunities to work on other projects related to the Lake Pend Oreille Fishery Recovery Program. There are potential opportunities for technicians to work on small independent projects to gain experience or increase their analytical skills, particularly in age/growth analyses, Program R, and more.

Qualifications:

- Demonstrated ability to handle responsibility and work independently

- Experience handling fish and knowledge of life history, anatomy, physiology, and ecology is required

- Experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing scientific data; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems

- Knowledge of age and growth analyses, Program R, and experience using Access databases is preferred

- Valid driver\'s license
