Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE Working as a member of a cross functional, self-directed work team of Lead Trades Workers to troubleshoot, repair and maintain equipment and building infrastructure throughout Case Western Reserve University buildings in accordance with blueprints, manuals, codes, and best practices. This is a lead carpentry technician role where carpentry skills will be used to assist zone carpenters in solving backlog, complex carpentry problems, and triaging work between in-house and what needs to be elevated to go out to Contractors. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Work with customer services and the facilities coordinator to recognize backlog in carpentry calls within the zones. Work with the zone carpenters to resolve the backlog issues by assisting in diagnosis or repairs, putting a team together, or self-taking on the more advanced or complex problems freeing the zone carpenters up to get other work done. (35%) Recognize the need for and perform preventive maintenance on building components, such as floors, walls, ceilings, hardware, glass, masonry, and casework. Assist zone staff when called upon to do so. Maintain the carpenter shop. Assist other lead technicians withing the team. (25%) Independently perform all carpentry duties including safely operating table saws, radial saws, sanders, planers, routers, joiners, standing drill press, band saw, and a wide variety of hand tools. Repair and install floors and ceilings, including drop ceilings, ceramic tile, other types of tiles, and concrete. Install and repair various types of door hardware including panic hardware, door closes, locksets, and hinges. Install cove base and do minor carpet repairs. Replace glass in doors, windows, and partitions. Make and install cabinetry, work benches, shelves, counter tops, plastic laminate, shipping cartons, frames, and other furnishings. Patch and paint minor repairs to walls or ceilings. (25%) NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Relay pertinent information to the Facility Coordinator on problems that will need to be sent out to a contractor. Assist in meeting with the contractor to review the job scope. (5%) Accurately maintain associated records and carpentry stock within the carpenter shop. Ensure that all carpenters record proper information into the work order system (e.g., locations, hours worked, billable account numbers, contact names and numbers, etc.) for use by the management team. (5%) Relay pertinent information to the Assistant Director on performance issues in the field. (4%) Transport and install equipment necessary for mechanical work throughout the university area. (1%) Perform other duties as assigned. ( CONTACTS Department: Frequent contact with department staff regarding workflow. University: Regular contact with all members of university to exchange information and resolve issues. External: Occasional contact with vendors and contractors to exchange pertinent information. Students: Contact with students in work Zone as it pertains to skilled trades' maintenance. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. QUALFICATIONS Experience: 10 years of experience working in the carpentry field, preferably in an institutional, heavy industrial, or light commercial environment but residential experience is acceptable. Experience in more than one discipline is desirable; framing, door hardware, finish carpentry, and cabinetry, etc. but not required. Education: High school education is required.
