POSITION OBJECTIVE Working under moderate supervision, perform research work in medical and related technical. The Research Assistant 1 for Neurodegenerative Diseases will support lead researchers in conducting experiments using animal and cellular models to study neurodegenerative diseases. Primary responsibilities include assisting with the design and execution of these experiments, as well as managing and breeding animal colonies as needed for the research. This position will work with animals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  1. Perform research work in medical and related technical areas involves use of lab skills. Carry out technical procedures and experiments following detailed instructions and protocols, including tasks such as mouse tattooing, ear clipping, and handling. Manage breeder cage setups and utilize the mLims mouse database. Comfort with mouse surgery and perfusion is required. (40%)  2. Conduct analysis of samples. Gathers data for follow-up analysis and quantifies it using GraphPad; comfort with this process is required. (15%)  3. Record results for a particular experiment or closely related series of experiments. Maintains accurate, organized records in the database, including tracking all animal samples, cell stocks, DNA constructs, antibodies, reagents, and lab supplies. (10%) 4. Maintain records of experiments. Maintain all raw data related to the projects and upload it to the cloud, including platforms such as BOX, Dropbox, and mLIMS. (10%) 5. Maintain test equipment utilized in experiments. Performs equipment repairs and coordinates with vendors for lab equipment maintenance as needed. (5%) 6. Order laboratory supplies. Purchase routine lab supplies, collect receipts, and monitor expenditures. Order reagents and other laboratory supplies, and maintain the chemical and biological inventory in compliance with EHS regulations to ensure everything is up-to-date. (5%) NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  Perform other duties as assigned. (5%) CONTACTS  Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow. University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information. External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information. Students: Contact with student employees to exchange information. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY  This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: Bachelor¿s degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required. REQUIRED SKILLS 1. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of protein biochemistry.  2. Ability to perform Western blotting, immunostaining, cell culture, cloning, protein purification and operate standard lab equipment.  3. Effective oral and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, technical and educational backgrounds within the department, school and university, and with individuals outside the university. 4. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through.  5. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable and a self-starter.  6. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. 7.
