Posted July 09, 2024 Date: July 2024 Title: Post-doctoral Fellow Department: Medicine / Institute for Transformative Molecular Medicine School: Medicine Location: 4th floor - Wolstein Research Building, 2103 Cornell Road Supervisor Name and Title: Atul Chopra, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine POSITION OBJECTIVE The Chopra lab discovered the fasting induced hormone asprosin that controls important aspects of mammalian physiology such as appetite, thirst, cognition, and glucose homeostasis (Cell 2016; Nature Medicine 2017; Cell Metabolism 2022, Nature Neuroscience 2024). Current effort in the lab is focused on the neuroscience of asprosin action and on understanding how asprosin is secreted from adipose tissue in health and disease. The lab is also focused on identifying new hormones. Working under limited supervision, coordinate research work in biomedical environment to employ human genetics as an initial impetus but also specializes in basic biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, mouse genetics, physiology and neuroscience to enable the discovery process. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Develop experimental design for research projects, carry out experiments at the bench and perform day-to-day data analysis. Amend research direction as necessary based on results and developments in the field. While maintaining meticulous records of experiments. (60%) Work closely with the principal investigator and with supervising investigator, keeping them informed of progress and difficulties. (5%) Develop new protocols and techniques as needed. (5%) Present data at laboratory and institutional seminars and scientific meetings. (5%) Prepare initial drafts of scientific manuscripts, including figures, for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Contribute preliminary data, background, significance and experimental design for grant proposals. (7%) Maintain all training certifications required to participate in the biomedical research. (5%) Supervise students and technicians, specifically training in techniques and overseeing their use. (5%) Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments. (5%) NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Perform other duties as assigned. (3%) CONTACTS Department: Contact with supervisor to plan and discuss research. Contact with staff, students, and faculty within the ITMM and the Department to exchange ideas and expertise. University: Rare contact with other departments to share information. External: Regular contact with outside vendors to obtain quotes. Occasional contact with researchers from other institutions to exchange ideas and research materials Students: Contact with undergraduates and graduate students with varying frequency SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY May supervise students and technicians QUALIFICATIONS Education/Licensing: A Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology or molecular biology Experience: Applicants for their first postdoctoral position after graduate school are preferred but one prior postdoctoral research experience is also acceptable. Rodent handling experience for at least 1 year strongly recommended.
