Posted January 17, 2024 The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (DMLL) in the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) invites applications for a tenure-track position in French as an Assistant Professor starting in August 2024. Required qualifications: * A Ph.D. in French, French Studies, or World Literature or Comparative Studies with an expertise in French. The field within French and Francophone Studies is open. * Evidence of clear promise of scholarship. * Ability to teach courses on French language, literature, and culture across levels. * The successful candidate should be capable of teaching in both English and French and should have native or near-native fluency in both languages. * Potential for innovation and excellence in teaching courses in the French major and beyond, and to develop interdisciplinary courses and research projects. * Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion. Responsibilities: * Expectations include teaching two courses per semester in French language, literature, and culture at the undergraduate level. * Contributions to the curricular development of the Program in French. * Departmental and university service. * Successful candidates must have active scholarship and plans to contribute to the French section, the department, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the broader university community. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is the multicultural epicenter of the university. As a collective, it represents the traditions and languages of almost every corner of the planet: Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America. DMLL is a vibrant and research-oriented department. It offers eleven language disciplines, with majors or minors in Chinese, French, German, Japanese Studies, and Spanish. In addition, coursework or a minor is available in Arabic, Hebrew, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian. The department has also developed specialized language courses for the professions: health, business, law, engineering, and diplomacy. The department offers study-abroad programs in Cuba, France, Japan, Jordan, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Taiwan. DMLL is associated with interdisciplinary programs in World Literature, Women's and Gender Studies, and Ethnic, Jewish, and International Studies. Case Western Reserve University is located in the University Circle cultural district of Cleveland, Ohio, home of the nationally top-ranked Cleveland Clinic, the internationally famous Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Cleveland Institute of Art. Within a five-mile radius of CWRU are the nation's second-largest theater district, several professional sports teams, a wide range of musical, artistic, and culinary venues, recreational opportunities, and numerous diverse communities in which to live. The College of Arts and Sciences houses educational and research programs in the arts, humanities, social sciences, physical and biological sciences, and mathematical sciences. The College comprises 21 academic departments, 35 interdisciplinary programs and centers, and 270 faculty members. Students are encouraged to conduct research in their chosen or related fields within the College and in collaboration with nearby cultural institutions.
