The Staff Systems Engineer (formerly titled Senior Systems Engineer) is responsible for leading a team through all parts of the systems engineering lifecycle while aligning to overall business objectives, project deliverables, and customer expectations. In this role, you will leverage Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) experience to assist GE’s Common Core Systems (CCS) team develop and manage technical objectives for multiple aircraft platforms.

Systems engineering is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered on the process of designing, integrating, verifying, and managing complex systems over their life cycles. At its core, systems engineering focuses on understanding a system's needs and requirements and ensuring (testing) that the development and integration of its components (verification) meet these needs throughout the system's entire life cycle. This involves a holistic view that considers every aspect of the system, including hardware, software, users, processes, and the operational environment.

In this position you will develop system architectures, requirements, interfaces, integration, testing, and verification of complex hardware/software for aviation-based systems while mentoring others. This role also impacts departmental operations and is responsible for planning, execution, bid estimations, and project performance. The role has autonomy where a self-starter will excel. Sound judgment and leadership skills are required. This opportunity will primarily be focused on technical execution of the team as well as individually assigned activities within the design procedures, practices and plans established by the programs.

Location Preference: Ideally, candidate is local to the greater Grand Rapids, MI area, or secondly Clearwater, FL.

Where would I work? Hybrid 3 days/week on-site (Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday). Optional remote Monday and Friday.

Job Description

This position will be responsible for leading, guiding and contributing to the systems engineering efforts across GE’s Common Core Systems based on IMA technologies. This role has accountability for assigned systems engineering duties for the IMA product line. This role provides technical leadership and assistance to project teams to insure they deliver on cost, quality, schedule, and technical milestones.

This position has the following essential responsibilities:

  • Manage the Systems Engineering Lifecycle for IMA products/technologies.

  • Develop and execute systems development and verification plans in accordance with GE Aviation processes.

  • Assist Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and Business Leaders in new pursuits.

  • Develop architecture and trade studies as needed to comply with customer requirements.

  • Crosstrain and mentor other Systems Engineers in the systems engineering discipline.

  • Drive and support engineering reuse within the IMA product line.

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the teams running projects within the product line. This includes supporting project planning, conducting reviews, metrics development/tracking, forecasting, development processes, and risk and opportunity management.

  • Ensure timely delivery of systems requirements, integrated validation/verification activities, and issue resolution.

  • Support the initiation of new projects to insure they are well planned in accordance with the product roadmap, the overall product line strategy and engineering process requirements.

  • Lead/manage interdisciplinary collaboration with software, hardware, test, safety, maintainability, reliability and certification teams.

  • Escalate issues that need additional engineering or business leadership assistance in a timely manner.

  • Uses best judgment to make decisions or solve complex tasks or problems in areas of operational/product management, manufacturing, technology or engineering as needed.

  • Takes new perspective on existing solutions – a fresh set of eyes

  • Consistently seeks optimized solutions. Essentially, the complete opposite of the we’ve always done it this way mindset.

  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.

  • May lead small projects with moderate risks and resource requirements.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or relatable field of study.

  • 12+ years of experience in design & development and/or technical project leadership within an engineering product development environment.

  • Strong systems engineering thought process on design, requirements, and verification.

  • Strong knowledge of Avionics maintainability and testability software.

  • Ability and desire to mentor other engineers in key technical areas.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas.

  • This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.

  • Ability and willingness to travel a minimum of 10% of the time.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the Boeing 777x and 787x airplane and related systems.

  • Prior experience managing or designing within an Avionics Design Assurance Level A Environment.

  • DO-297, ARP 4754A, DO-178, DO-254 and/or DO-330 process assurance experience.

  • Experience with engineering processes including requirements definition, requirements allocation, requirements validation, requirements verification, integration, embedded software, electronic systems, FAA/EASA/NAA certification, and system safety.

  • Able to communicate directly with senior leadership inside and outside the company.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in development, integration, validation, and verification of systems.
