About the Program Founded in 1900, the program in German Studies offers a BA, minor, MA, and PhD. German Studies provides a comprehensive introduction to German language, literature, and culture, offering something for all students, ranging from those new to the study of the language to native speakers. Regularly-taught courses address German culture, cinema, literature, and folk tales. The program is housed within the Department of Asian, East European, and German Studies (AEGS), whose mission is to contribute to global education on campus, engage people across societies, and gain an appreciation for multiple perspectives. The program develops student skills in writing and communication, critical thinking, and intercultural competence, enabling its students to succeed in a global environment. Of particular interest to the program is linking the historic mission of German language and culture education to contemporary global interchange, transnational issues, and the role of media in these relationships. Music, video, photography, poetry, games, and other media, including VR environments and machine learning, are conceived of as integral to the program's curriculum. Students in the German program co-create knowledge about these media using both analog and digital means. Job Overview The German Studies program at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of German in academic year 2024-25. The position is potentially renewable for a second year. Salary will be commensurate with candidates' qualifications. Essential Functions Teach and supervise undergraduate courses in German language and culture. The position requires a 3-2 teaching commitment (3 courses in the fall semester and 2 courses in the spring), primarily in introductory and intermediate language classes. Contribute expertise in applied linguistics, language pedagogy, second language acquisition, migration, global media literacies, transnational German Studies, and/or a related sub-field to the department and university. Coordinate the first four semesters of the German language program. This includes advising and placing students in first- and-second year German language courses, developing and implementing lower-level language curricula and assessments, supervising a small number of graduate student instructors, and organizing co-curricular and outreach events. Minimum Requirements Prior to the effective date of appointment, all of the following are required.
