Job Summary

The Scenic Artist carefully executes the artistic design vision of each production in collaboration with the Scenic Designer. Working closely with the Artistic and Production teams, this position is responsible for the visual representation of the scenic design. This position implements and oversees the paint design elements for each show in the producing season, ensuring highest quality work.

A union designer for Court Theatre Productions during its producing season. Must be a member of an artistic union, such as I.A.T.S.E., USA, or SDC, or working under their contract for membership consideration with the unions. This is a part-time position of approximately 10 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties as a union designer for Court Theatre\'s producing seasons.
  • Serves as a regular scenic artist throughout the producing season.
  • Collaborates with Scenic Designers and Production Staff on the vision and execution of the paint and artistic elements of the set.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge and experience in live Theatre Production.
  • Oversees the implementation and execution of the planned paint designs for each show\'s set.
  • Communicates with the Production Department on the paint needs for each design and ensures supplies are well maintained.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work space.
  • Works cooperatively with the artistic and production team.
  • Represents Court Theatre in a professional manner.
  • Collaborates with the design team and production crew to plan, develop, and implement property, special effects, and/or scenic elements of theatre productions.
  • Leads technical support in the development and implementation of electrical elements in productions, including sound design and sound reinforcement schemes.
  • Works autonomously within established procedures to perform quality checks prior to rehearsals, previews, and performances. Operates the lighting and/or sound system during rehearsals, previews, and performances.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Education:

  • High school diploma.
  • College or vocational training in theatre production or related field.

Ex erience:

  • Theatrical design experience.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Knowledgeable about theatre production and standard practices.
  • Working knowledge of standard theatre practices according to contract type.

Preferred Competencies

  • Perform position responsibilities in a professional and creative manner.
  • Work cooperatively in a group and on own.

Working Conditions

  • Moves throughout theatre to various locations, according to job requirements.
  • May remain in a stationary position for up to 2 hours.
  • May work under bright lights or in a dark setting.
  • Involves bending, reaching, and working at heights above 10 feet.
  • This is a part-time position of approximately 10 hours per week.
