Summary:

The CNC Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic components made from castings, forgings, and stamped steel materials. This is a Monday through Thursday day shift role with overtime sometimes required on a Friday and/or Saturday. The CNC Machinist is expected to be able to program, read blueprints/CAD drawings, adjust offsets and change inserts, change out jobs with appropriate tooling, set-up and qualify first article parts. Supports the production requirements for all work cells. Prioritizes daily work based on Safety, Quality and Productivity requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Always has safety first in mind when working at Cardwell, uses all personal protective equipment as required. Ensures all equipment and forklifts are functioning per design and function. Shutdown equipment and stops operations in unsafe conditions, lockout/tagout when necessary.

  • Completes Red Flag Condition cards for urgent remedies to safety concerns and completes work orders to ensure timely repairs to equipment.

  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.

  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, and grinders.

  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine or machine’s program as required.

  • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications and drawings.

  • Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed data.

  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly through the use of calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, and indicators to verify dimensions to print.

  • Installs machined replacement parts in machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.

  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.

  • Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.

  • Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, maintenance, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems. Works with Material Preparation and Finishing Departments as needed.

  • Updates inventory systems for usage and scrap and prepares Material Tags for non-conforming parts.

  • Designs and builds tools to efficiently manufacture products

  • Follows all Company personnel policies and process procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school and four years machinist experience; or six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of CAD software applications, and CNC programming experience.

  • Must be able to read blueprints and have a basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work unsupervised.

  • Ability to make or modify tooling and/or fixturing in order to machine part.

  • Strategic and creative thinking to analyze issues that may arise and create solutions.

  • Ability to write, edit, and troubleshoot programs at the machine control.

  • Possess a mechanical aptitude; ability to use a large variety of hand tools and basic knowledge of power tools, such as grinders, dynafiles, and other deburring, grinding, or sanding equipment.

  • Ability to MIG weld, preferred.

  • Ability to respond positively to feedback and implement change in process and procedures as needed.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • High level interpersonal skills to work effectively with others to meet production demands

  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to roll up one's sleeves to get the job done

  • Skilled at working effectively with cross functional teams in a matrix organization

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and a formal ERP system (Oracle, SAP, etc), or ability to learn new computer software programs, such as Oracle

Physical Demands:

  • Employee is regularly required to stand for 6 hours at a time, with minimal breaks.

  • Employee is regularly required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds.

  • Employee is regularly required to operate machinery, including but not limited to CNCs

  • Employee is regularly required to wear safety glasses, ear plugs, steel-toe shoes with metatarsals, and a face shield

  • Employee is required to be on site during scheduled shift to perform daily duties and responsibilities.

  • Requires daily face-to-face interaction with employees on production line.

Work Environment:

  • The employee will normally work in an ambient temperature production environment (typically 60-90 degrees F), with some exposure to loud noise.
