Job Summary

The Senior Backup\storage Engineer will be responsible for the delivery and support of a stable and reliable Backup and storage environment which satisfies the performance, scalability and functional requirements of Sky. Take ownership of and drive to completion storage initiatives to improve efficiencies across the team and the storage estate. They will be actively involved in the resolution of Incidents, fulfilment of Service Requests and the owners of technical Changes. The Senior backup\storage engineer may also be required to undertake line management duties as outlined by the Storage Support Manager. This will include assisting with the management of on call rotas, allocation of resources to projects, time recording and reporting, deputising for the Storage Support Manager at project, department and team meetings and to assist with the development of the team.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Senior Backup Engineer include:

  • Customer Engagement :

  • Providing excellent customer service and actively engaging with all stakeholders to ensure that they receive a prompt effect service.

  • Infrastructure Management:

  • Performing pro-active maintenance tasks to manage the physical and logical NetBackup Flex Appliances and Dell Data Domain along with IBM Tape Libraries and Drives.

  • Take the lead with continuous improvements to backup and storage management processes.

  • Ensure effective monitoring is in place across the storage estate.

  • Raising/escalate incidents and/or Service Requests to vendors to attend site to resolve hardware issues.

  • Contribute to the Storage and Backup Roadmap discussions and presentations.

  • Incident Management:

  • Resolution of incidents in a timely manner.

  • Whilst managing their own work load the senior must be available as an escalation point for less experienced member of the team.

  • Maintain good working relations with Incident and Change Management team to ensure they are appropriately informed when the storage team are undertaking work across the storage estate.

  • Work Order Management:

  • Ensure that work requests are being actioned in a timely manner and to the appropriate standards.

  • Change Management:

  • Creation of Change Request records when required to support workflow.

  • Maintain good working relations with Change Management and work with them to improve process flow.

  • Management of a portfolio of procedures for routine tasks.

  • Team Management

  • Assist the Storage and Backup Support Manager by ensuring that the team are recording and submitting their time accurately.

  • Assist with the administration of the Storage Spark on call rota.

  • Assist the Storage and Backup Support manager by deputising at Project, Department and Team meetings.

  • Assist the Storage and Backup Support manager by deputising at Vendor meetings and by building and maintaining vendor relations.

  • Assist the Storage and Backup Support manager by contributing to the weekly reports, monthly roadmaps and quarterly metrics review meetings.

  • Assist in the personal development of team members.

Candidate Specification

Essential:

  • Experience with the deployment and management Storage & Data Protection systems from both the vendor GUI and command line, including.

  • EMC Data Domain

  • NetBackup Flex Appliance

  • NetBackup Software Support

  • IBM Tape Libraries and drives

  • Experience with disaster recovery methodologies and data replication technologies, related to Veritas NetBackup .

  • Observability Tools including Alta View.

  • Upgrading NetBackup core infrastructure .

  • Malware and Anomaly Detection experience.

  • Managing Cloud Backups and experience with NetBackup Recovery Vault.

Desirable:

  • An understanding of copy jobs SLP’s Backup Policies etc..

  • An understanding of Centralised Backup technologies.

  • System administration and scripting skills on Windows and UNIX environments;

  • Familiarity with database technologies (Microsoft SQL, Oracle) is also desired;

Industry Experience:

Essential:

  • minimum 5 years technical administration experience with Data Protection technologies.

Desirable:

  • 5 years technical administration experience with Data Protection Technologies

Additional Skills:

  • Unix Command Line usage and basic scripting and programing

  • Good interpersonal skills.
