General Summary:

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the company’s Physician expert, providing medical thought leadership, medical guiding principles & strategy for Unum. The primary focus is on ensuring UNUM’s Benefit Center’s needs are met for timely, efficient, high quality medical support services to all UNUM product lines, consistent with the current regulatory requirements, claim process, and internal workflow standards as set forth in the Benefits Center Claims Manual, underwriting manual, and associated documentation. This role will continually assess business needs, determine the appropriate number and specialty mix of physicians, recruit, develop and educate physician talent, as well as be the medical liaison for vendor Medical Directors.

The CMO also oversees and/or directly manages physician teams of varying specialty and tenure; teams are composed of cross site or remote employed and contracting physicians. This role is point for physician selection, answers medical questions from physician staff outside of formal reporting relationships, and has an oversight role to physician staff to ensure consistent application of medical guidelines and principles.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops the optimal medical delivery model to meet business needs in the highest quality, cost efficient manner.

  • Recruits, hires, develops, and retains physician talent to maintain an appropriate number and specialty mix of well-trained physicians.

  • Ensures high quality medical decision-making consistent with the current regulatory requirements, claim process, and internal workflow standards as set forth in the Benefits Center Claims Manual, underwriting manual, and associated documentation.

  • Contributes medical expertise to policies, practices and operational effectiveness to various units within the Company.

  • Demonstrates thought leadership in areas where changing medical knowledge will impact marketing strategies, actuarial projections, services to our customers across multiple product lines, and health issues for Unum employees. These consultative engagements can span multiple levels of leadership within the Company.

  • Act as the company resource for finance, legal and other corporate departments for consultation on medical treatment, diseases or other areas of subject matter expertise as required.

  • Develops, communicates, and manages to high performance expectations.

  • Ensures delivery of quality and timely medical analysis and documentation within regulatory, compliance and internally driven mandates.

  • Monitors quality, effectiveness, efficiency and professionalism of physician work through regular observation of Forums, review of AP Contacts and Written Review documentation, solicitation of feedback, and review of quality assessments.

  • Proactively identifies improvement opportunities within Medical Operations and the broader Benefits Center and offers solutions.

  • Uses metric analysis to monitor and assure that service volumes and turnaround times to adhere to established expectations.

  • Identifies individual physicians, workgroups, or director teams with workflow inefficiencies and helps create solutions; monitors and manages individual and workgroup workloads and inventory by site and across-sites; and

  • Assists the direct manager with budget planning, expense management, and staffing within established budgetary constraints.

  • Model and promote a customer-centric approach to the delivery of medical analyses, requiring a strong sense of professional ownership of one’s own work as well as the work of the medical operations team.

  • Support the sales team personally or through identified and trained medical consultants as needed.

  • Reinforce the expectation that all behaviors and decisions should be professional, fair and timely, and consistent with professional ethics, the Benefits Center Claims Manual, and UNUM’s ethics training and policies.

  • Maintain effective working relationships with partners and colleagues.

  • Promotes diversity within hiring pools, succession planning, mentor relationships, and/or project work

  • Promotes an inclusive environment in the work team and with partnerships within the company.

  • Encourages and supports employee participation in Employee Resource Groups and I&D events.

  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Job Specifications

  • Ability to strategically link medical knowledge to business needs.

  • Ability to influence corporate partners and assist them with their objectives.

  • Strong leadership, communication, collaboration and problem solving skills.

  • Graduation from an accredited professional school (MD, DO).

  • Unrestricted professional license.

  • General Medicine Practitioner Required. Board Certification in one of the following specializations:

  • Internal Medicine

  • Family Medicine

  • Occupational Medicine

  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

  • Seven years clinical experience.

  • Experience in disability insurance or managing the disability experience of a large, self-insured employer preferred.

  • Experience managing physicians and/or other healthcare professionals strongly preferred.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$163,700.00-$320,000.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
