University of Virginia Research Assistant Professor, Center for Public Health Genomics in Charlottesville, Virginia

The Center for Public Health Genomics (https://med.virginia.edu/genome-sciences/) at the University of Virginia is looking for a Research Support Assistant Professor in the laboratory of Dr. Chongzhi Zang. Dr. Zang’s work focuses on computational biology and functional genomics at the cutting edge of genomics, epigenetics, and high-throughput molecular ‘omics research.

Duties & Responsibilities: The successful candidate will join a collegial and productive research team focused on developing computational methods for high-throughput genomics technologies using quantitative models, statistical methods, and implementation of integrative data science approaches to study chromatin epigenetics and transcriptional regulation of gene expression in model cell systems and human diseases such as cancer. Analytical responsibilities will include development and implementation of innovative computational methods, algorithms, software tools, analysis of high-throughput data from advanced genomics technologies, develop methods for single-cell multi-omics data using machine learning techniques, and develop computational models to explore mechanisms underlying transcriptional regulation.

  1. Ph.D. or equivalent degree in bioinformatics, computational biology or a field related to quantitative and biomedical sciences.

  2. At least 3 years of experience after completion of the doctoral degree, with research experience in computational epigenomics and high-throughput omics data analysis.

  3. Experience of both independent computational biology research and collaborative biomedical research.

  4. Proficient in Python and R programming and familiar with machine learning techniques.

  5. Experience in mentoring junior scientists and trainees (graduate and undergraduate students).

  6. At least three first-author or senior-author publications in peer-reviewed journals in the related research field.

  7. Academic communication skills and teamwork skills. Experience of grant writing and grant acquisition is preferred.
