Albemarle County Regional Parks Maintenance Worker in Charlottesville, Virginia

Regional Parks Maintenance Worker - Western District Department of Parks and Recreation Full Time, 12 Months Non-Exempt, Pay Grade 27 Benefits Eligible, VRS Eligible

Job Summary/ Objective:

Performs responsible skilled work in the repair, maintenance, and care of County grounds, facilities, infrastructure, and amenities. This position is subject to after-hours recall and is designated as essential personnel, requiring the employee to report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow or other weather-related conditions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervision is exercised over seasonal, volunteers, contractors, and community service workers.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for supervision of subordinate personnel and assigning work schedule in the absence of the Regional Park Supervisor.
  • Coordinates, schedules, and performs daily work necessary in the proper maintenance and care of park buildings, grounds, athletic fields, facilities, and equipment.
  • Operates and maintains all necessary vehicles and equipment; operates snow removal equipment/emergency equipment and assists with all emergencies and unforeseen events.
  • Follows OSHA guidelines to instruct employees on the safe operation of equipment, the proper use of safety equipment and the safe use of materials, such as pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
  • Provides recommendations on the annual fiscal needs for the assigned district for the development of the annual operating and capital budgets; completes appropriate purchase/procurement procedures for equipment repairs and maintenance needs.
  • Performs grounds maintenance tasks including litter removal, mowing, repairs to fixtures; turf management (seeding, fertilizing, etc.); athletic field maintenance; minor construction, carpentry, plumbing; operates various types of equipment and power tools; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Prepares for building and shelter reservations, athletic field use and special events.
  • Performs necessary repairs and maintenance such as plumbing, general electric, and painting in all ACPR Facilities.
  • Supports the Regional Parks Supervisor in the development of the weekly work schedule, winter projects and preparation for special events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of grounds maintenance materials, equipment, and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of the standard building trades.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to use common hand tools.
  • Ability to operate machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to read and to perform basic functions on a personal computer.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school
  • Possession of a valid drivers license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Two (2) years experience in the operation of motorized equipment and building and grounds maintenance work.

Preferred Qualifications/Certifications:

  • Certified pesticide applicator license (R60 - Registered Technician)

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Work frequently requires strenuous physical tasks, including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying items weighing 20 to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional lifting of items weighing over 100 pounds.
  • Prolonged operation of mowing equipment both riding and walking over rough terrain.
  • Work environment routinely exposes employee to potential major injuries, adverse weather with occasional exposure to hazardous substances.
  • Regular contacts with office personnel, other staff members, vendors, and park users.
    • Some weekend work required.
Salary Range:

The hiring range for this position is $21.41 - $23.67 per hour (approx. $44,542 - $49,230 per year). Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, P-60.

Remote Work:

This position is not eligible for remote work. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
